Bloomberg Gun Giveaway

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070518/ap_on_re_us/gun_giveaway

Quote:
The Virginia Citizens Defense League, a gun-rights group, organized the "Bloomberg Gun Giveaway" in large part to thumb its nose at Bloomberg, who accuses some shops of allowing illegal purchases of firearms that later were used in crimes in his city.
...
The first winner, Jay Minsky, responded with an obscene hand gesture when asked what message he hoped to send to Bloomberg.

Too bad I don't live in VA. I'd support the give-away.

Of course I'm working with the newly formed TCDL, a group working towards open carry in Texas. We missed it for this session. We'll have to try in 2 years.

I just wish we had *some* kind of carry in Illinois.

We'll the last thing the legislature is working on here is fixing the Automobile carry law. Basically, it will allow anyone who isn't a criminal, to carry a firearm in a vehicle, as long as it is concealed

We have to have them unloaded and in a case that is not accessible here...

I'd heard about this, but thought it was tomorrow. Darn. I was hoping to open carry for the first time in VA. I'm surprised the Ffx. Co. gov't. didn't order their police to harass those who open carried. They would do so if any individuals did so somewhere else, though it is legal.

I am all for guns, but given the road rage I've seen countless times, I don't think that would be a good idea. . .

Though it may help resolve the idiot-driver overpopulation problem...

Anyone who's irrational enough to use a gun in a bout of road rage is not going to be deterred from carrying in their car by another law. A LOT of folks carry guns in their cars in VA and I've never heard of a road rage story here involving a gun.

No argument here. If someone would tell me where to send a check to support the Supreme Court case, I would.

Say, on a side note, what would be the result if the Supreme Court decides not to hear the case?

If the SCOTUS refuses to hear it, the last ruling stands.

There are CCW laws in place in California. I had one. You need to show a "compelling reason". Doctor, store owner, pharmecuitcal rep carrying drug samples, jeweler, private investigator (me), etc...the CCW's are dished-out on the local level (Sheriff).

http://www.packing.org/state/california/

If you live in San Francisco, though...forget it. Only Dianne Feinstein and a handful of other folks there have 'em. Los Angeles is pretty impossible too. However, if you live in a rural County (wink, wink) and receive a CCW there, you are allowed to travel statewide with the permit.

Here in FLA we can carry in our car as long as the weapon is in a holster and "not readily accessible" (wink, wink). Inside a glove-box (un-locked) is considered "not readily accessible"!

We also have very lienent CCW laws. As long as you are not a convicted felon or under the order of a court for domestic violence or mental illness, you can apply for and will receive a CCW permit. Unlike California, I can carry ANYTHING that's legal to own. Feel like carrying a .44 Magnum on Monday, .380 PPK on Tuesday and a .45 1911 on Wed? No problem. In California, you can only carry the gun that's listed on your permit.

No open carry in Texas? When did that change? I thought they were one of the states that had open carry (and open carry of long guns in a vehicle...i.e. gun rack)?!?

Oh...ironically, California does have a non-permitted "open carry" law!

Danny, Texas has been no open carry for as long as I can remember. I wish it were otherwise!

We had the 'traveling' thing about having a pistol in the car... but 'traveling' was not well defined. Then a law passed defining it, but some asshat DAs flat out defied it, and said they would prosecute anyone caught with a gun in their car (guilty until proven innocent?) and current legislation is trying to eliminate that type of behavior.

It will stand for that circuit, but that leaves most of the rest of the country in opposition to that ruling.

I'm going to start another thread, on this subject.

Correct. But if the SCOTUS hears it, it could be a huge all or nothing deal for either side. If the DC Circuit Court ruling stands, NYC and Chicago will have to comply. If the SCOTUS refuses to hear the case, NYC and Chicago can continue ignoring the 2nd Amendent. But if the SCOTUS overturns the DC decision, it could spell doom for a lot of places with lenient gun laws and politicians who want to clamp down.

I do not fear a SCOTUS ruling. But here is what I expect:

2nd Amendment is an individual right, but "Reasonable" laws can be put in place.

Then we get to define "reasonable".

Think Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Religion. There are laws restricting certain speech (definitely around election time) and laws restricting certain religious activities (Human and animal sacrifice, use of banned drugs during ceremonies, etc).

Me? I wouldn't outlaw anything. If a person can afford a Raptor, why not? During the early days of this country, many well to do men owned cannons and loaned them to their militias. Privately owned merchant vessels were armed. Most people these days would not take up the ownership.

Now, using weapons could be restricted. I expect that using an RPG against a home invader would be a bit overkill. And I expect sales of arms out of the country could be restricted.
