Concert to Save the Earth

Did anyone watch any of this? I flipped it on in time for an interview with Camero Diaz. Let's just say, she doesn't come across as one of the leading authorities on atmospheric change. We could even say that she doesn't come across as having enough intellect to rival a typical 5th grader. What an idiot!!!

I also thought it was humorous to listen to celebrities preach about changing to more efficient light bulbs as they stand on one of several stages around the world that were sucking down enough power to light up NYC for a year.

What happened to the hole in the ozone that was supposed to usher in the next ice age???

As usual Al Bore-ing is out to save the world, and get voted in as the Prez at the same time. Some of the "supposed star's" on there were terrible and I turned it off and started watching the History channel on the slingbox instead.

Does Al really believe he can be elected based on one (non) issue? Isn't there anything else in the world that's worthy of consideration when voting for POTUS?

Big waste of time and money, what is it that they hope to accomplish except get more self serving press exposure.

Cameron Diaz has the brains of a No 2 pencil, has she ever done any meaningful acting?

I thought that was ironic as well. I would have been impressed if they had come up with an earth friendly stage design, maybe everyone performing acoustic using natural light and one camera.

Do we even want to go into all the jet fuel used, gas for tour buses etc.. to put on all these concerts?

I wonder how many tons of carbon their concerts produced.

Oops! Wait it says on their website they powered the stages with "clean energy". I hate to be a cynic but I am not buying that line at all.

Quote:
Live Earth is committed to producing the most eco-friendly series of concerts possible. To do this, we are taking important steps to minimize each concert’s carbon footprint — from powering the stage with clean energy, transporting artists to the venue in low-emission, alternative fuel vehicles, and encouraging ticket holders to take advantage of their public transportation options.

Audience travel accounts for the vast majority of a concert’s impact on our climate — as much as 50%! You can ANSWER THE CALL by taking public transportation or by carpooling with 4 or more people to Giants Stadium.

The most efficient way to reduce travel emissions to Giants is to catch the bus or train, and we have outlined your mass transit options below. Please book early to make sure that you get to the concert on time.

But did you see the short shorts she was wearing? Wow she looked smokin hot.

No one really expects her to an authority on anything. She is just a high profile celeb trying pass along a positive message.

I'm not sure it's a cycle we're in or what but I can say this much Portage Glacier and Exit Glacier are retreated beyond any other heating period. Furthermore, the perma-frost up around Chena Hot Springs, north of Fairbanks to melting faster than at anytime since the last ice age.
I'm waiting for comprehensive definitive studies on the subject and meanwhile more willing than not to side with caution. Undoing the earth's atmosphere shouldn't be taken lightly if that is what's going on.

Diaz was pretty good in Being John Malkovich but that's it.

I heard a short interview with Lars Ulrich (Metallica drummer) and when asked why he was getting involved in the concert he replied, "Well, I have 3 kids, and a socialist partner who beats me over the head about these kinds of things."

I dislike him for the whole Napster thing but that was pretty damn funny.

Nobody can deny that it's great entertainment watching these buffoons try to save us from destroying ourselves. In the ultimate irony, they even blame the failure of the event itself on global warming ..... er, I mean climate change This looks like some satirical piece on The Onion, but it's genuine

Huge venues, thousands of lights and speakers. Lots of A/C to cool the places off from the heat generated by the lights. What a crock.

It's just another pat on the back for this crowd. Kinda reminds me of the "I choose to use my voice" commercials. The feel good for the guilty rich is the real focus. The "cause" is a distant second.

I agree, Kach, much better than jumping to conclusions on flimsy evidence and trying to force expensive, restrictive solutions of questionable effectiveness on the general populace for a problem that may or may not even exist.

It's the Corp Left's (not an oxymoron) version of making massive amounts of money off the common man.

The Right has Big Oil; the Left has Global Warming.

If I had any time and extra $, I'd be coming up with all kinds of ways to make money off this movement.

Don't complain about it. Make money off it.

there are tons of people who will give you $ to live "carbon neutral" lives. Man, what a joke.

Missed it, leading a post Porsche Parade Back country Tour, probably more fun than watching this so called concert. I'm waiting for the South Park episode.

Wayne, at home I have replaced all of the reading lamps with the newer flouresecent bulbs that are shaped like regular light bulbs. Takes about 30 seconds to get to full brightness and then you can't tell the difference.

Those fluorescent lights are dangerous. I've had 2 catch fire - YES, CATCH FIRE. Luckily I was home to snuff them out. The lights are all made in China and are extremely poor quality. I wonder how many carbon credits I would need to buy if my house burned down and spewed all that smoke into the air?

Check your lights if you have them - if you see brown staining on the plastic transformer housing, you've got problems.

I wouldn't really expect any different commentary on this board, and much of the criticism has merit.

BUT, can anyone with a straight face say that conservation is a *bad* thing to engage in? That we shouldn't really bother to ponder what our footprint is on the earth, and just consume as much as we can for as long as we can?

You can argue about whether CO2 emissions are causing global warming all you want...to me the bigger more important issue is one of trying to conserve where you can. Small changes can have big consequences.

So this concert wasn't the ideal way to get the message across (and likely a wrong spin anyway). Maybe we need to bring back the crying indian commercials from the 70's to try and get people to quit being such slobs and maybe walk somewhere every once in awhile instead of driving, recycle, and use a little less resources today.
