interior garage wall material??

I'm spending the best $50 per month of my life-I'm renting a storage unit so I can put all my CRAP there and actually have a decent looking garage. Heaven forbid I might even have a tool chest and know immediately where to find a 15mm socket or maybe a phillips screwdriver without having to rummage around my basement or van!

Anyway, right now my (attached) garage interior is covered in dark faux wood paneling believe it or not. I guess I could add orange shag carpeting and some lava lights to go for that kooky kitsche look, but I think I would like to bring it out of the 60s and into the millenia. My default idea is to simply have it drywalled. Is there anything else I should consider?

Drywall, painted stark white. The garage will seem twice as big as it does now.

The brighter light will make it much easier to find tools/fasteners that fall on the floor under the car.

And the drywall is a good fire stop.

I Googled "Garage wall options" and found various offerings from what amounts to "California Closets" for garages. It applies like horizontal siding and you hang stuff made for it off the channels between the boards. Only $200 for 40 sq ft or a little bigger than the area of a piece of drywall.

Drywall it is.

just did drywall in my garage and it was a relatively inexpensive project that made a major improvement. i will also be adding better lights.

i hear you on the storage unit. i ALMOST went that route but dropped $1400 on a 10x16 shed instead as i needed a home for the riding mower, trimmer, etc. it is a wonderful thing to have a 2 car garage with most of the floorspace cleared out. yet another tip, if you need shelving consider putting the bottom shelf 1' AGL to facilitate easy vacuum access.

OSB? NO! Unless you have some sort of covering. Otherwise drywall and cover it all with cabinets/shelving.

Bob - I did drywall - and stucco for the rest - paint a nice white glass paint and you can hose it down. I used epoxy based paint.

Just an FYI - Lowes just started carrying Whirlpool Gladiator - for about $100 less than I have found elsewhere....

Just got all the cabinets put together - now I just need to unbox all the crap in my garage...

If it is paneled, why not just paint it white? Painted paneling can look nice.

In the background of this pic, you can see that our downstairs paneling has been painted and I think it looks OK.

Gyp. board would be a good choice. Perhaps some cement board 4' and below for durability, especially if you're constantly bashing things into the walls (lawnmowers, bicycles, thrown tools during "frustrated" moments of P-car wrenching, etc.).

But good old gypsum board will be fine all by itself too.

I think I am with Tim on this one - paint the paneling - I'd do kilz primer - then a good coat of gloss or semi gloss paint and call it done.

What can I say? She wanted a new gun and I needed to come up with a gift she would like for our 10th wedding anniversary. She was thrilled!

She painted our dark wood paneling (I try to avoid any household work....wouldn't want to set precedence ), but I think she washed, primed (seems like the paint store told her what to use to cover dark paneling), then painted. It truly looks fine even though I was thinking it would turn out awful. I think it is pretty common actually.

Honey, put the gun down, and then I'll tell ya how I really feel about your painted paneling

If I ever grow up myself, I might take applications

Are you any good at tearing down paneling and installing drywall?
