I'm gonna get flamed for this but in all humility, I just don't get Clapton.

I've tried, given him the benefit of the doubt, heard many people I respect say that he is fabulous. He obviously is massively chopped out, with skills most can only dream of and been tremendously successful. But when I listen to him, I am not dazzled by emotion or feeling or rhythm or tone or invention. He comes off to me as soul less. But I'll keep listening and maybe I'll come across something that changes my mind (I did enjoy his MTV Unplugged set).

I won't flame, because I agree. My wife and I once saw footage of Clapton playing alongside Buddy Guy, trading licks. Buddy exposed Clapton as being guilty to all those things you say above. I like his music and he deserves admiration, but he just doesn't belong in the upper echelon.

Probably can't get twenty five minutes in youtube. Would that the camera had been on Duane all the time. The Fillmore concert is one of my desert island discs.

One of my favorite lines in the new movie, "Night at the Museum" is when Ben Stiller tries to calm down the north and south civil war museum display guys. (They come to life every night and start fighting the civil war again)

He says something like, "Chill guys. The north won OK? Slavery is over. But hey, guys from the south, it's OK, you get the Allman Brothers and Nascar."

+1 And I'm a HUGE blues fan. His voice is boring. As you said, his blues is soul-less. He was better as a straight rocker. Layla. That works.

Watch Duane. Watch Eric. See the difference? Thought so... Heart and soul, in contrast with robotic precision. And Jim, Live at the Filmore, with its full length version of Whipping Post, is also one of my "desert island discs".

Have to disagree. Go listen to "Have you ever loved a woman" from the Layla album. Or Nobody Knkows When You're Down and Out." Or "Anyday." Clapton's playing just drips with soul.

He's had his ups and downs, and I can see where you might think that about some of this playing, but there are moments of sheer brilliance and agony is in his playing. On the original Derek and the Dominos Live album (not the reissued cd, but the vinyl album), the version of Let it Rain is just mind boggling. He is obviously smacked out of his mind, and fumbles around for the first 4 or so bars of the solo. Then he plays about 5 minutes of the most scorching, gut wrenching guitar I've ever heard from anyone. Unfortunately for the CD remaster they used the other night's performance of Let it Rain, and it just isn't there.

In the video above he has a rare clam during his solo. That is not his best work, but it is more about the time warp watching it, and the incongruity of Cash being involved. Plus, Jim Gordon was an amazing drummer. His solos during the Fillmore shows were some of the most musical drum solos I've ever heard. I'd much rather listen to him than a technician like Peart.

Thanks for the excellent clips, my son and I just finished listening to them and they brought back memories (to me)!!
