Digital shutter speeds must be getting up there, not like I could have gotten those with a film camera either.

They are starting to catch up. I think my old EOS 630 from 1991 or so had a top SS of 1/4000 or 1/8000. I think some of the newer top end models will go that fast. I think the EOS 1D MkIII will hit those speeds or one of the top end EOS models. Canons are one of the primary sports photo cameras so they excel at high speed stuff.
