500GB IDE hard drive for $110
I just bought a new IDE hard drive for my server at home to store MP3's. It's a Seagate 500GB 7200 IDE drive and the bast part is that the drive was $110! amazing that 500GB can be so cheap. I ordered the drive from tigerdirect.com last week and it arrived three days later. I installed it and it's very fast and quiet. The drives carry a three year warranty.
I'm not affiliated with Seagate or Tigerdirect in any way, just a satisfied customer. BTW, SATA drives are also available at the same price.

Memory, both in hard drives and chips is at all time low prices. Agree with you and am loving it. Just about to spring for a Terrabite drive for storage myself as the prices are about what I can pay lately.

Actually picking up a couple of those for Tivo upgrade sounds like a good idea. . . Might look into that.

Drives are so cheap is just absurd. I have 1.2 terabytes of storage in my main system at the moment.

Jeff,
Are you using the Tivo desktop? I have mine configured to auto-copy programs from the Tivo to the computer over my network at home when I am traveling. That way I do not lose programs that are over-written but it sure takes a lot of hard drive space. Buying a couple of those would go a long way and $240 or so is not a lot of money for a terrabite of storage.

No, how does that work?
I have the integral Tivo/DVR thingy by Panasonic that came with my directTV service. I signed up for an online forum (bunch of Tivo geeks) a long time ago but hardly ever go there. I know there are guys that totally geek out on these things and can re-program them, etc. but honestly I haven't seen the value of investing who-knows-how-many hours to learn how to do all that when I watch so little TV as it is. Mostly I just record F1, occasional ball games, BSG, etc. My wife has a couple shows she records and sometimes watches, but honestly it'd be nice just to have more capacity - especially given how cheap it is! If I can pick up a TB worth of storage for under 250 bucks and spend a couple of hours figuring out how to wire it all up, it's well worth it. Worst case I decide it ain't worth the trouble to add them to the Tivo unit (if it's a big PITA and requires a lot of time-wasting) and I throw 'em in my PC. No big deal, IMO. How do you use Tivo desktop? Is this something I should be downloading/looking into? Sounds interesting.

Tivo has its own software that you can put on your computer then allow it to "talk" with the Tivo unit, either using a direct Cat5 cable or WiFi and an adapter on the Tivo.
You can then transfer any recording to your computer and save it on a hard drive, CD, DVD or whatever. It as well allows you to "auto transfer" programs so if you are traveling it goes to your computer and is deleted off of the Tivo unit when the drive gets full. I would not buy the cheap drives above to use INSIDE the Tivo unit. The DVR style of recorders use a hard drive whose transfer speed is a lot faster than a normal hard drive, or so I was told by WeakKnees. Course they are also trying to sell hard drives so it may just be the salesmen talking. Edit, look here: http://www.tivo.com/mytivo/domore/tivotogo/windows.html

Scott,
The upgrading is not hard if you are careful and know computers a bit. "Hacking Tivo" is a good book to help you with this. As well there are several websites that tell/show you how to do it. Anyone interested do a search on Tivo on PPOT and there is also a thread on how to do it.
