Must say, Peter Gabriel is fabulously talented. I still stop what I am doing and watch that "Sledgehammer" video if I ever see it.

Actually saw SRV and Jeff Beck play together once. Wow, just wow.

nostatic 06-17-2007 09:02 PM

I saw the tour with Beck and SRV. I appreciate SRV as a truly great player, but I think Beck is/was in another league. I "get" everything that SRV did (a lot of copping Hendrix). Beck does stuff that just makes me want to burn my guitar. I saw the There and Back tour front row center, and I've never, ever seen anyone with such control of their instrument. Beck would be holding a note, turn his body 45 degrees and have the feedback pitch change, then turn again into another note. And his use of the vibrato bar is just phenomenal...only Jimi had more going on. Absolutely amazing.

Dance On Fire

It was the Summer of 65 that Jim Morrison had the legendary meeting with Ray Manzerk on the beach in Venice that led to the forming of the Doors. Night after night the Doors would perform at Clubs on the Sunset Strip, developing and perfecting the early songs that would make them Rock and Roll legends. Performing the 11 minute epic "The End" at the Whiskey, Morrison while bazing away on LSD came up with the lines "Father I want to kill You, Mother I want to FK YOU."

This is the other epic 11 minute song that the Doors developed at the same time, "When the Music is Over" Every night the song would be improvised until the final form arrived. This video is about as close as your going to come to the Doors in the early days playing clubs, before they became famous. Before the Shaman became the Lizard King.

The Dogs Of Lust- The The

sand_man 06-18-2007 09:41 AM

Maybe not so well known, but ....My Morning Jacket, "Steam Engine"(having seen them live three times, the world stops whenever this song plays through my stereo tubes):

so. I do believe. none of this is physical
at least not to me
so, I do believe
that anywhere it goes
it's always with me
it's not the dream
that makes you weak
it's not the night that makes you sleep
but it's a voice. and it's a choice
to call you out. or stay at home
so! I do believe
none of this is physical
at least not to me
so I do believe
that anywhere it goes
it's always with me
it's not the beast. it's not the sheets
so soft and warm. all over me
but it's the touch. you need so much
to move around on this green earth
take your money and your drugs
take your money and your drugs
to anyone who wondered
what old jebus meant to me
take him out to go diving
in red patoka sea
the brain melts in the twilight
with the boar and moving trees
your skin looks good in moonlight
and god damn those shaky knees
the fact that my heart's beating
is all the proof you need

Eric Clapton - Tears in Heaven

Grieving for his lost child - Hits me hard!

Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?

I must be strong
And carry on,
'Cause I know I don't belong
Here in heaven.

Would you hold my hand
If I saw you in heaven?
Would you help me stand
If I saw you in heaven?

I'll find my way
Through night and day,
'Cause I know I just can't stay
Here in heaven.

Time can bring you down,
Time can bend your knees.
Time can break your heart,
Have you begging please, begging please.

Beyond the door,
There's peace I'm sure,
And I know there'll be no more
Tears in heaven.

Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?

I must be strong
And carry on,
'Cause I know I don't belong
Here in heaven.

It's such a great time to be a music lover!!! Soooo many great acts out there, making beautiful music! MMJ is a band that I've been following passionately from the beginning. Their live release, "Okonokos" is tough to beat. I have the CD, DVD, and vinyl boxed set, and beyond The Who, "Live at Leeds", I think it's one of the best live recordings!

Always enjoy songs (and books) that can put you there ...in the story. Can't beat Gordon Lightfoot's "Edmund Fitzgerald" for making you feel that life (mariners) and all the dangers it entails.

And if I had male children (didn't) I would have locked them in a room, put on Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Simple Man" playing non-stop until they GOT IT!!!

Any song with Karen Carpenter. The most amazingly "pure/clear" female voice, ever.

JCF 06-19-2007 02:39 AM

Yeah, those are all the cool songs - but yesterday I was listening to The Lex and Terry Radio Show and they started playing bits of all those real stupid songs that no one in their right mind would admit to listening to much less liking - you know , stuff like "Horse with no name", "starfire" (now that I think of it those two might be the same song - and for the record I DON"T like them). Bands like America , KC and the Sunshine Band...What's his name - Something Macdonald.
Most of them I never knew who did them or ever even remember listening to them. Roght now I am trying to remember some more but am blanking. Haven't heard them for years except maybe in the background at a department or grocery store.
But DAMNED if memories (mostly of old girlfriends) didn't come flooding back from the first few notes like it was yesterday .. Some memories of long family drives in the old station wagon...
Trips.
Every stupid song they played I remembered like I wrote it.

Music sure is a powerful drug.

Mr_Wizard 06-19-2007 02:51 AM

Lex and Terry are a waste of space (Just like all other morning DJ) I hate to listen to talk radio. That is why I have Sirius.

lisa_spyder 06-19-2007 04:24 AM

This one does it for me (personal choice is the version by The Righteous Brothers)...was thinking about Bob and Kathryn Mae too when I chose this...

When you walk through a storm, hold your head up high

And don't be afraid of the dark.

At the end of the storm there's a golden sky

And the sweet, silver song of a lark.

Walk on through the wind, walk on through the rain,

Though your dreams be tossed and blown.

Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart,

And you'll never walk alone.

You'll never walk alone.

Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart,

And you'll never walk alone.

You'll ne-ever walk alone.

U2 - With Or Without You lyrics

See the stone set in your eyes
See the thorn twist in your side
I wait for you

Sleight of hand and twist of fate
On a bed of nails she makes me wait
And I wait without you

With or without you
With or without you

Through the storm we reach the shore
You give it all but I want more
And I'm waiting for you

With or without you
With or without you
I can't live
With or without you

And you give yourself away
And you give yourself away
And you give
And you give
And you give yourself away

My hands are tied
My body bruised, she's got me with
Nothing to win and
Nothing left to lose

And you give yourself away
And you give yourself away
And you give
And you give
And you give yourself away

With or without you
With or without you
I can't live
With or without you

With or without you
With or without you
I can't live
With or without you
With or without you

My Girl by The Temptations

I've got sunshine
On a cloudy day.
When it's cold outside,
I've got the month of May.

Well, I guess you'll say
What can make me feel this way?
My girl. (My girl, my girl)
Talkin' 'bout my girl. (My girl)

I've got so much honey
The bees envy me.
I've got a sweeter song Than the birds in the trees.

Well, I guess you'll say
What can make me feel this way?
My girl. (My girl, my girl)
Talkin' 'bout my girl. (My girl)

Ooooh, Hoooo.

Hey, hey, hey.
Hey, hey, hey.

I don't need no money,
Fortune or fame.
I've got all the riches, baby,
One man can claim.

Well, I guess you'll say
What can make me feel this way?
My girl. (My girl, my girl)
Talkin' 'bout my girl. (My girl)

Talkin' bout my girl.
I've got sushine on cloudy day
With my girl.
I've even got the month of May With my girl.

Standing on the Moon by the Grateful Dead, with Jerry singing.

Was the first song I heard while at work back in 95 after hearing the news about Jerry back in 95. A chilling song to hear for me to this day.

I don't have any clue how you guys stick the videos in the post, so here is a link to Trey Anastaio and Bruce Hornsby singing "Standing on the Moon" at a tribute to Jerry.

Lots of good songs posted so far...

Even more I could think of...

U2 - Beautiful day

Beatles - Long and winding road

PF - Wish you were here

This one by "The Band" alway gets to me:

It makes no diff'rence where I turn

I can't get over you and the flame still burns

It makes no diff'rence, night or day

The shadow never seems to fade away

And the sun don't shine anymore

And the rains fall down on my door

Now there's no love

As true as the love

That dies untold

But the clouds never hung so low before

It makes no diff'rence how far I go

Like a scar the hurt will always show

It makes no diff'rence who I meet

They're just a face in the crowd

On a dead-end street

And the sun don't shine anymore

And the rains fall down on my door

These old love letters

Well, I just can't keep

'Cause like the gambler says

Read 'em and weep

And the dawn don't rescue me no more

Without your love I'm nothing at all

Like an empty hall it's a lonely fall

Since you've gone it's a losing battle

Stampeding cattle

They rattle the walls

And the sun don't shine anymore

And the rains fall down on my door

Well, I love you so much

It's all I can do

Just to keep myself from telling you

That I never felt so alone before
