songs that make time stand still

Here Comes the Flood (1990 version) - Peter Gabriel

Everything comes to a halt when I hear it. Devastating.

When the night shows
The signals grow on radios
All the strange things
They come and go, as early warnings
Stranded starfish have no place to hide
Still waiting for the swollen easter tide
There's no point in direction
We cannot even choose a side.

I took the old track
The hollow shoulder, across the waters
On the tall cliffs
They were getting older, sons and daughters
The jaded underworld was riding high
Waves of steel hurled metal at the sky
And as the nail sunk in the cloud
The rain was warm and soaked the crowd.

Lord, here comes the flood
We will say goodbye to flesh and blood
If again the seas are silent
In any still alive
Itll be those who gave their island to survive
Drink up, dreamers, you're running dry.

When the flood calls,
You have no home, you have no walls
In the thunder crash
You're a thousand minds, within a flash
Dont be afraid to cry at what you see
The actors gone, there's only you and me
And if we break before the dawn
They'll use up what we used to be.

Lord, here comes the flood
We will say goodbye to flesh and blood
If again, the seas are silent
In any still alive
It'll be those who gave their island to survive
Drink up, dreamers, you're running dry.

Didn't Peter Gabriel do the song with the lyrics "In your eyes" Don't remember the song, but I love it.

One of my favorites as well.

nostatic 06-16-2007 11:14 PM

actually a lot of PG songs slow down time for me (Solsbury Hill, Mercy Street, Don't Give Up, Red Rain, etc) , but HCTF stops it dead in its tracks.

Hothouse Flowers - Thing of Beauty
I (barely) play guitar and will look up chord charts on the net, then find the music and play along. When looking for Thing of Beauty I came across someones amateur video...

An amateur video set to Mercy Street (which is an ode to Anne Sexton...an amazing poet)

<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/JoVIU8nb2yY"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/JoVIU8nb2yY" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

And an Anne Sexton poem (which inspired this song). She was hospitalized a number of times (including electroshock), and finally comitted suicide.

THE KISS

My mouth blooms like a cut.
I've been wronged all year, tedious
nights, nothing but rough elbows in them
and delicate boxes of Kleenex calling crybaby
crybaby , you fool !

Before today my body was useless.
Now it's tearing at its square corners.
It's tearing old Mary's garments off, knot by knot
and see -- Now it's shot full of these electric bolts.
Zing! A resurrection!

Once it was a boat, quite wooden
and with no business, no salt water under it
and in need of some paint. It was no more
than a group of boards. But you hoisted her, rigged her.
She's been elected.

My nerves are turned on. I hear them like
musical instruments. Where there was silence
the drums, the strings are incurably playing. You did this.
Pure genius at work. Darling, the composer has stepped
into fire.

slodave 06-16-2007 11:34 PM

This one stops time for me. The memories attached to it are priceless.

If i could save time in a bottle
The first thing that i'd like to do
Is to save every day
Till eternity passes away
Just to spend them with you

If i could make days last forever
If words could make wishes come true
I'd save every day like a treasure and then,
Again, i would spend them with you

But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do
Once you find them
I've looked around enough to know
That you're the one i want to go
Through time with

If i had a box just for wishes
And dreams that had never come true
The box would be empty
Except for the memory
Of how they were answered by you

But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do
Once you find them
I've looked around enough to know
That you're the one i want to go
Through time with

Was thinking about it a while ago and for the most part I am still listening to music that was made in the 60's, 70's and early 80's.

Except for Jazz I rarely listen to anything live...

livi 06-17-2007 04:10 AM

IMO, there is nothing much worth listening to made the last 15-20 years.

Suppose, I am just getting old. My daughters keep referring to artists and music that I have never heard of and they go: "BUT DAD! You must be joking, surely you have heard of....!!"

There are dozens of songs that stops time as it were. One very intoxicating intro that immediately comes to mind is the drums and base in Stone´s Slave. Dododo dododododo dododo...:D

mattdavis11 06-17-2007 04:36 AM

Stayin' alive, Bee Gees. "I'm going nowhere, somebody help me!"

Gabriel is a genius. The Lamb was brilliant. It's one of my Desert Island discs.

Alice in Chains Unplugged. Great performance.

There was some great stuff. Timeless.

Here's Van Morrison and John Lee Hooker doing "Gloria".

Agreed; with two teenage boys that are very much into their music, I hear a lot of it. I honestly give it all a fair chance, but not much even begins to pique my interest.

The list of older tunes that will make time stand still for me is based more on memories surrounding that particular tune than any kind of musical or technical merit. Some will make me break out laughing, thirty years after the memory they invoke. Some will make me cry, some will make me daydream, some will make me wonder "whatever happened to... (girlfriend, buddy, etc.)" Some of them that move me the most I have to play when I'm alone, if that makes any sense.

Songs that stop time - there are a few for me.

Here's a couple that really do it for me. Man, they take me back to being a mid/late teen, and discovering the fairer sex.

one

two

(Of course, the quality of a song has little to do with whether it stops time for an individual! But hearing these really take me back).

This song & video has always "worked" for me -

<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/b5nu8vXaz2A"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/b5nu8vXaz2A" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

Did I ask too much
More than a lot
You gave me nothing
Now it's all I got
We're one
But we're not the same
Well we
Hurt each other
Then we do it again
You say
Love is a temple
Love a higher law
Love is a temple
Love the higher law
You ask me to enter
But then you make me crawl
And I can't be holding on
To what you got
When all you got is hurt

Good call, dad. Stunning tune.

Great musical arrangement, but he isn't anywhere near to any of the high notes. He's a bit more aggressive on this version from '86

That is one of top 10 favorite songs, EVER. Especially this time of year, early summer, roof down, driving in the evening. I had never seen the video, thanks!

For stopping time:
Helpless, Neil Young
Red Rain, Peter Gabriel
Last Dance with Mary Jane, Tom Petty
Magnolia, JJ Cale

Indeed. When I hear Maggie May, I'm fourteen again. When I hear Tiny Dancer, I'm snuggling with a lost sweetheart in the back of a '68 Mustang.

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an off hand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but its sinking
And racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in the relative way, but youre older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the english way
The time is gone, the song is over, thought I'd something more to say

Home, home again
I like to be here when I can
And when I come home cold and tired
Its good to warm my bones beside the fire
Far away across the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spells
