Well, that's an interesting point Wayne. There are a few bands I can think of that *literally* are not the same band with a different drummer, and Rush is one of them. You couldn't just plug another guy (unless he was a Neil Peart clone) into that band and have them achieve that success. Others?
1. Tool 2. Dave Matthews Band (by a MILE) 3. Metallica (maybe) I usually have a couple more, but I am a little groggy at the moment. Anyone else?

My two complaints about Neil Peart: 1. He always plays the same EXACT part, every time. Including his solos. 2. He's always emotionless/expressionless to watch...he doesn't match the energy of his playing. At least look like you're having a good time up there...

Willie "big eyes" Smith of The Muddy Waters Band. Best shuffle EVER! Set your watch by him.

Rush is also a power trio. You cant replace any member in a band like this without substantial consequence. |

Buddy Rich...love the "one-hand roll". Love for Phantom at DCI's this year - they may just take it!

In my earlier post, I named Gray Barrier as one of my picks. IMHO, Phantom's line has never been better than when he was writing the medolic parts to compliment Marty Hurley's battery. One year I'd love to see PR sweep it all (even though WE know they do it just about every year in "class" anyway )

I saw Neil Peart play last night and the night before and am going to see him again tomorrow night. He still has it.

Being a former drummer, both Peart and Carl Palmer genereally leave me cold. Great chops, but somehow they lack any emotion. They also suffer from "too many notes" in my book. After Krupa and Rich, my favorite drummers were longer on musicality and potentially a little short in other areas:
Danny Saraphine -- OK, his tempo was a bit uneven, but his musicality and sticking I feel are second to none. Ruddy ***** (I mean Buddy Rich) even complimented him as being one of the best drummers that he had ever heard, and Ruddy never complimented anyone. "Make me Smile" has some great stuff at the end. Phil Collins: He actually got better as he matured and put fewer notes into each piece. And speaking of Early Genisis... Nobody mentioned Bill Bruford yet??? He was playing in the above clip as the "guest drummer" for Genesis prior to Chester Thomson. There are few who can work their way around a beat like Bill Bruford can! He's got a resume to match: Yes, King Crimson, Genesis. Those were the groups that started the "Art Rock" trend that Rush followed. How can you argue with the later line-up like Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew, Tony Levin and Bill Bruford??? But for purists, it's hard to argue with Larks' Tongue in Aspic (Part 1) from ca 1972, still with Bruford!

Went to see Chris Botti last night, what a bunch of talented musicians he pulled together. Billy Childs on keyboards, Mark Whitfield on guitar, Carlos Enrique on bass, Lucia Micarelli on violin and Billy Kilson on drums. If you have a chance, it's a show not to be missed.

Sticking to OP .
Best drummer you never heard of.Check out Donnie Marple. 07 drum off winner. Never had a lesson in his life. His band was an opener on a tour i was on,they are a DMB carbon copy called elmwood. All excellent musicians, and good southern boys, but he was the standout.
