![]() Yeah, I knew he was a drummer. He's credited with the drums on Higher Ground. He plays pretty much every instrument in the studio. Ridiculous amount of talent. No music involved when I met him as it was about a non-profit he was trying to start and I was involved on the new media end of things via his opthamologist (I have odd connections). Did get to meet Greg Phillinganes as well. Got to be a somewhat typical fan, saying, "I saw you playing with Clapton in '87 at the Forum." Wonder is just larger than life. He absolutely fills the room with presence. Very few people in the world like that. |

Kenny Wolleson and Jeff Ballard were friends of mine in high school and college jazz bands during the 80's.
I played at the Monterey, Montreux, North Sea and Yamano Jazz festivals with Wolleson and with Ballard in the Cabrillo College performing jazz band and combos. I like Art Blakey. KT

As a drummer, I have to admit I had heard of him....
![]() SO speaking of drummers we have heard of..... Neil Peart IMHO is by far the most talented drummer to record music in the last 20ish years. Hunt around www.neilpeart.net for giggles. Cheers

How is it that he's white?
Reminds me a bit of Peart. Very good, tight. Doesn't try to "shout" with the instruments. Very good stuff. Thanks for sharing.

Man, I don't even know if Neil Peart breaks my top *20* of the most talented drummers in the last 20 years. I know he's great, but there are so many other guys I think are more interesting and innovative.
Here's a few I really dig (in no particular order): 1. Vinnie (To me, the best all-around drummer in the last 20 years) 2. Manu Katche 3. Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez 4. Weckl (Previously the "Neil Peart" of jazz...but then he loosened up) 5. Danny Carey from Tool 6. Gadd 7. Dennis Chambers 8. Stewart Copeland (Just saw him last week with the Police..sat right behind the drumset. It was awesome.) 9. Akira Jimbo 10. JoJo Mayer (siiiick) 11. Carter Beauford 12. Nat townsley 13. Tony Royster Jr. 14. Jeff Alton 15. Russell Batiste jr.

Rodney Holmes is simply a fantastic drummer and is probably best known for his work a few years ago with Santana...

I admit to being a little snowed by Mr. Peart. But he was playing the music I was into when I first switched form brass and woodwinds to precussion. (same goes for Mr. Copeland) I patterned my learing after their techniques so therefore I am bit of a "homer" for their skills.
Another favourite of mine, no not really that talented in the big scheme of things, is Phil Collins. Loved watching live while Genesis played a few numbers with duelling drummers, quite a sight to see! I guess my preference is for drummers who complete the music, not just play along with it. It is one thing to provide the tempo and beat to a piece, and another to add to and complete said piece. Another remarkable story, though electronically aided, is the drummer of Def Leopard. Pretty good receovery from a pretty bad injury. Don't care for his style, but admire the commitment. For you drummers out there, check out my thread and comment on it.......... Questions for the drummers.... Cheers

Two drummers I've admired are Michael Shrieve who played w/ Santana (supposedly on acid in the "Woodstock" footage), and Mark Brzezicki who played w/ Midge Ure, Simon Townshend and Procul Harum. But for some of you younger folk, here are 2 old pros going at it...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwJAAlXomVk
Also you can go to YouTube and see Gene playing a solo on a box of matches from the movie "Ball of Fire" w/ Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck.
