Golf Revisited
OK, some of you don't think of golf as a sport, so maybe a very technical skilled pastime?
It is one of few games that the outcome is totally up to you. No subjective scoring here, you put it in the hole, you win. No points scored by your form or music, no judges that can deduct points for the way you play. They certainly can't deduct points for the clothes you wear. You do it or you don't, nobody else to blame. You win, you lose, nobody blocks your shot, nobody interferes with your shot. You don't really have to invest that much money to play. I don't have to be good to have fun. Saturday in one of Tigers interviews he was asked about the many putts, really close putts he missed all day. The guy asked him if he thought about the outcome if he made those, he just said those were great putts and he was very happy with them, no crying, no whining. They just didn't go in. I really like that about him. Surfing, Snow Sking are similar but now for me, golf is my favorite. |

Dean, you just capture the 'pure' essence of golf!!
Is up to you and no one else to make it great or suck big time. Took me many years (and lot's of money) to realize that simple truth, after that I do not care if I hit on the 70's or the 90's (or 100's)

If I want to go outside and enjoy a nice sunny day and some fresh air I don't see why I should have to pay a hundred bucks to do so. I dunno. To each their own I guess, it's just an activity I'll never understand. I'd rather go out on my mountain bike or for a walk or whatever. Doesn't cost me anything and I don't feel like I have to follow anybody's rules but my own.

I stopped playing mostly because of slow play. And I refuse to use carts, and increasingly courses required them to "speed things up". I can walk a course in under 3 hours, but sitting and waiting between each shot is maddening. Then you have guys with no course etiquette...leaving ball marks, putting the pin at the front of the green, waiting to hit when there is no way in hell they're going to reach the green, etc. Seems that at some point in the 90's the game was taken over by the nouveau morons.

Pull the trigger, you hack!! I used to play with a guy who was about a 6, and he never took a practice swing. His argument was that practice swing has just as much chance of being pure as the next one. Practice on the range turtles!!

Another reason Florida in the summer is awesome. Yeah, its hot out but you have the municipal course to yourself. There have been times when I only see one other golfer all day.
I used to walk and carrry a lot, I am lazy now and there is no where to put my beer when I walk so off in the cart we go... ![]()

I used to play a lot of golf. Once I hit my 30's, my attitude was all about having fun and enjoying the day outside.
After my second day on the track, I walked off with a big grin on my face and said out loud, "man, this makes golf look silly." I now play once a year because some buddies like to get together. And I agree about greens fees. Expense account golf (e.g. Pelican Hills) was nice. Hmm, how do I figure out expense account DE's?

I pay $18 for 9 holes and cart every Monday. It isn't often enough to improve my game, but I'm in a work league and my teammate is part owner of my company. It is a sweet arrangement.

My wife and I use my parents home in Florida a couple times a summer becasue the guest fees and greens fees at their club are peanuts compared to the "season". We get to play 2 championship courses anytime with barely another group in sight. Sure its hot so we play early in the morning or late in the afternoon. I still hit the same forged irons I have been playing for over 15 years , my putter was a high school graduation gift ( class of 1983). I have fooled around with different woods and wedges over the years but I don’t need the “latest and greatest” at around a 15 USGA index the wedges and the putter save more strokes then the driver or the 3 wood.

My g/f and I play a little 9-hole course near my house. It's not the nicest or most prestigious course, but it's fun and a great opportunity to work on my short game. Greens fees are $10 and I've never had to wait more than 10 minutes to tee off. If I want something bigger, there's Haggin Oaks, with 3 different 18-hole courses and a $25 green fee.

Golf is free, I haven't paid for a round in over 5 years.
I play at least once a month usually at private courses or at very nice upscale public courses. What you do is, when a salesman or vendor calls and asks for an appointment you tell him that you are swamped and can't find time to meet with him. Then you tell him that you are so busy you were barely able to get friday off to go play golf. He asks where you are going to play. You say you don't know yet, where ever you can get a tee time. He wants to give you his sales speel so he says, hay why don't you play with me at pelican Hills or wherever, my treat. He gets your attention for 4 hours so he can try and sell you something, you get a free round of golf and a few drinks. Sometimes you get fed too. Nothing wrong with it as long as you don't buy something as a payback. |
