Ridiculous Iphone hype?? I dont get it.

What is it with all this excitement and hype over a electronic device??? Have peoples lives become that boring and pathetic that the arrival of a new "phone" is one of the biggest events of the century? I just dont get it.

Probably 2 things happening here. First, Apple has a successful track record for introducing cool, highly innovative technology. The question is what are they going to do with "a phone." Plus a lot of folks simply love technology for technology's sake.

The second component is the cellular carriers are undergoing a huge shift in the way they operate as more and more of their revenue is coming from data, rather than voice. So, will this new device be successful enough to accelerate that shift.

I don't get it either. So what. Besides, spending $500-600 on a phone is silly.

legion 06-26-2007 05:02 AM

How is the iPhone different than any currently existing phone?

lendaddy 06-26-2007 05:03 AM

Is this track record of technological products the iPod, the next iPod, and the other iPod after that? :)

legion 06-26-2007 05:06 AM

Don't forget they had the Mac...25 years ago.

VINMAN 06-26-2007 05:18 AM

Granted the technololgy might new and cool, but its a friggin phone for christ sakes! A phone! People are acting like this is the cure for cancer. Its sad. It has gotten to the point where everyones lives revolve being "connected".
Hey trust me, I work for the big V phone co. I want our profits up! :D But come on now. Its getting silly.

I think the point is that it's MORE than a phone. Apple is going after the youth generation that have had ipods and all the other stuff we can't seem to live without! I don't consider myself to be an electronics geek, but I will probably buy one once the 2nd generation comes out!

lendaddy 06-26-2007 05:34 AM

The iPod begat the big iPod which begat the small iPod which begat the tiny iPod which finally begat the phone iPod.

I think Alexander Graham Bell is turning over in his grave...

Too much hype over a glorified cell phone. So you can watch a You Tube clip on it? Big deal -- I suppose watching someone else's miserable existence is a good escape from one's own miserable existence....

I think people need to disconnect from technology / the interwebnet / cell phones / iPods, and reconnect with real live people.

Yeah, I have a cell phone, and my company-issue Blackberry. But lately I find myself using both less and less. I also wind up taking it with me less and less (my personal phone -- I gotta take the stupid electronic lease from work with me everywhere I go).

This past weekend, Mrs. Z-man and I went to a B&B up in the mountains in New York state. There was absolutely no cell phone reception. What a wonderful thing!

I have an iPod as well, and use that primarily in my new truck, since it has a mini-stereo (3.5mm) connection for it, and sometimes at work, where there's too much noise around me. But at least I listen to decent music on it, produced by artists, instead of the crap that kids are listening to these days...

I guess I'm either an old fart, or just sick and tired of being so connected.

-Z-man.

One cool thing it could do (though I'm not sure if it does) is be a GPS unit. It's got that big touchscreen which would work well.

I imagine you would need an external antenna though, which would suck.

legion 06-26-2007 05:43 AM

Well put Zoltan.

Believe it or not, I measure promotions/moves based on whether or not they come with a pager/cell phone. I've managed to avoid both and have only taken two calls at home in seven years--at they were both in my first year.

On Thursday, the wife and I depart for the Upper Penninsula of Michigan. My cell phone stops working just north of Green Bay.

My Nextel phone already has that feature (though I decline to pay for the service).

lendaddy 06-26-2007 05:46 AM

Actually so does mine now that I think of it. Nevermind the antenna comment then:D

Will people still care about the iPhone 50 years after it is introduced?

nostatic 06-26-2007 06:53 AM

I still have wistful thoughts of my first mac (a 512KE, bought back in '85).

Not the same as a Porsche, but you hopefully get the point. Sure there is more hype than substance, but such is the industry. It's how you sell stuff. But Apple also tends to change the market/world more than other tech companies. ymmv

It keeps your mind off the big questions, like why are we here?

Q: Why am I not happy?

A: Look television!
