Help! Date this rifle please???
I see other gun owners here so;
I purchased this rifle recently at an estate sale and cleaned it up. Marked on bbl: J. Stevens Arms and Tool Co. Chicopec Falls Mass USA. *Crack Shot* It’s a .22 Cal Long rifle. Barrel measures 20” in length. Walnut stock and forearm, steel butt plate, brass bead front sight, V block rear sight, falling block receiver. S/N A 1529. Total length approx. 34 ˝” . I have refurbished old guns in the past and most have patent dates or state: Pat Pend. This one reads: Pat App’d. For. I cannot find this exact gun in any of my books. Can someone date this for me? I feel it must be a very early model because of the Patent “APPLIED FOR” for stamping. Thanks for any help. ![]() ![]()

The side lever model was made from 1900 to 1913. I'll try to get an exact date for you soon. Blue book rates it at $50.00 @ 60% to $295.00 @ 100%. I would add at least 10% to any of those numbers.

Splinter is a shotgun term. Referring to Splinter vs beavertail forends. The beavertail wraps half the sides of both barrels. The splinter rests under the two barrels.
The top is a beavertail bottom is a splinter. ![]()
