Neighbor Dilemma

So today, our across the street neighbor comes up to me and my dad. Apparently he is accusing one of our cats for "doing his business" in his garage or right around it. Although he never really caught him in the act of doing it, my cat has been known to wander his property from time to time. I don't doubt my neighbor, and I'm pretty sure that he's right about our cat. Also to add, there are a lot of stray cats in our neigborhood that could very well be suspect to this.

But anyway, he wants something done to stop this activity. Now if this was our dog, we wouldn't have a problem. It's just that cats aren't that easy to keep track of. And, to top it all off, he has been known to take cats and dump them off three cities away. I know this because his family had a cat that he eventually kidnapped and took three cities over. When asked what happened by his wife and kids, he said he didn't know what happened. He told my dad this a while ago.

To my point, him and my dad got into an argument about the subject and apparently my dad thinks that if our neighbor gets the chance, he'll take our cat. We told him, if the cat is a problem, use a broom, hose, whatever, just don't hurt him or doing anything to him. He doesn't seem too reluctant. What should I do?

Keep the cat indoors.

Get a chip implanted in the cat so if it does go "missing" you improve your chances of getting it back.

Tell the neighboor that if there is ever another incident that you will be happy to come over and clean it up and make it right whether or not your cat did it.

Tell neighboor in no uncertain terms that if the cat ever disappears that he is the prime suspect and that you will make the rest of his life a living hell so he should be nice to kitty.

I get mad enough when one of our cats gets stuck in my garage and craps in the corner. I don't know what I would do if it was a stray cat.

Any cat on our property which isn't one of ours gets relocated 15 miles away and done "drive by cat" style.

I can, but they do get stir crazy. I've thought about keeping them in at night, but that's not exactly full proof. Sometimes the cats are not where you think they are and can be hard to find. Plus they really like to be outside and do what cats do.

There are some $@*&ing cats that wander around my townhome complex and constantly mark my car cover as there own. I don't mind cats, but that really ticks me off. Cover stinks and I have to be careful touching it.

The pet store I go to for my birds, chameleon etc., had a can of "Four Paws" repellent for cats and dogs. It seems to work. Spray the ground around the garage door everyday. I think it's a watered down pepper spray. It's not really offensive to me and don't ask how I know what pepper spray smells like. It's was about $8.-, maybe worth a try.

Buy a can and give it to your neighbor.

Shows your neighbor that you aren't dismissing his concerns... that could go a long way if he is pissed from arguing with your father.

Keeping the cat indoors will be next to impossible if he's used to being outside.

If you do keep him inside, don't tell your neighbor. That way if a cat pees again and he accuses your cat, you can eliminate him from the list of suspects.

If your cat pee'd in my interior, he'd get a one-way trip to the next area code.

I'm a cat owner. My cat stays indoors unless she's under my direct supervision. And then, she only wanders around the immediate area. If a neighbor told me my cat pee'd/crapped in his yard, I'd be over there in a flash with shovel & bleach to clean it up.

I absolutely love animals and have had pets my entire life, but never understood having a cat as a pet, when the cat spends most of its time roaming the neighborhood using your neighbors yards, garages and planters as its personal litterbox.

Doesn't seem like much of a "pet" and seems very rude to the neighbors.

We have some of those cats from time to time when a new person moves in, usually from out of state. Those cats are never long term, it isn't long before they are coyote snacks.

We just got a second cat - they are both indoor only. As soon as the kitten is old enough - the claws come off.

The older one doesnt seem to mind - she lives a very stressful life though.

I just had to have my cat of a little over 20 years old put to sleep Monday of last week. If your cats aren't neutered, you should have them done. That makes them somewhat less inclined to wander. It's really best if the cats are inside. They stay healthier and live longer. Mine was allowed to go outside during the day, but I kept her inside at night.
My first cat was a junkyard car I tamed when I was about 9 years old. He grew up in the junkyard where they kept German Shepherds and Doberman Pincers as guard dogs. He could rip up any dog in a couple of seconds. But he stayed out most of the time including night, and he fought all the time and died at about 8 years old.

Cats are very cool. Way more interesting than dogs.

Ok back on topic. Your neighbor is nuts. As we sleep at night the streets are loaded with animals running around fornicating, killing, eating, craping, etc... Get over it or move to a plastic bubble. I have neighbor dogs (I love dogs too) that dig up stuff and leave nice doggie logs in the yard. It's all part of the community experience.

Tell the neighbor you'll do your best to *control* your cat but unless the animal is really destroying property or killing off his favorite rodent species there's not a whole heck of alot you can do. You eliminate Tigger (guess at name) and the neighboring alpha feline will take up where Tigger left off.

Dave, Dave, Dave. I think I've found the source of your girl issues.

But, alas, I have a solution. Take your pets to BeauBlues's house and let 'em roam around outside. His neighbor will be so freaked about lizards and birds he'll wish for the days when it was only a cat. And BeauBlues's cat will be saved by the neighbors' distraction as well.

And, with the "non-traditional" animals removed from your own home, you'll have yourself a hottie in a week, guaranteed.
