Got a new (to me) Porsche today:

An alternate title for this thread could be, "I've got a boner that just won't quit..."

Picked up my beater 996 today. It's a repo from my bank in Mpls. with 192k miles on the clock, it has definitely had a new transmission recently and probably an engine as well, but records are non-existent. I did not even get the owners manual w/ it, unless it's hidden really well somewhere in the car. It's was owned by someone with some legal problems, so it was really like one of those police auction type deals where you get nothing but the car and you had better know how to look at a car. No PPIs here.

It runs and drives perfectly, tires are good, clutch and front pads are brand new OEM, (zero miles), interior is close to mint other than needing a good carpet shampoo, and all accessories work. Ice-cold A/C, yeah!

It has some body kit on it, (GT2?), with some aero improvements. It also has the factory 18" wheels and factory ltd. slip, it is a 6-speed w/ PSM but it can be switched off. It is plenty quick, but it sounds like a Lexus w/ a slight exhaust leak.

I had never even driven a 996 before this week, and only ridden in one or two. I'm telling you, they are still building these things like a bank vault, it's tighter than a frog's ass w/ close to 200k miles. The guy who owned it commuted 100+ miles a day on the freeway.

I almost forgot, it has some aftermarket springs and possibly other pieces, I'm still investigating. It sits low and is quite a bit firmer than stock, but not uncomfortable to me. I love driving it, it looks big on the outside for a sports car but does not feel big behind the wheel. It has the familiar short hood w/ nothing in it, and feels nice and light in the front.

Looking forward to taking it to Willow Springs, stone chips are not an issue w/ this car!

Why don't you make some grown men cry and give us a ballpark figure on what you paid for it?

Oh yeah......

Denis,
Excellent! Clean that puppy up and drive it! I drove a 996 in the spring and it was fast and fun to drive! Have fun!

Holy F#$K!!! If Jim's not crying, I sure as hell am!!!! Man, I don't like 996s at all, but for $10K, that's a hell of a platform for a track beater!!!

Now, where did I put that "green with envy" smiley? Oh yep, there it is:

Some less glamourous shots:

Perfect city and track car, though! Door dings? Already got 'em. Stone chips? How would you even know? It's actually a pretty car though, if a bit of a 10-pacer for a 996.

Man, I'm salivating. Lose the grimy interior, what looks to be a non-functional turbo wing, ditch the a/c, install a roll cage... Yep, definitely drooling

Congrats, man!

Lexus with an exhaust leak, lol, that's a perfect description for the odd way a lot of 996s sound for some reason.

Thanks for the congrats, but the wing is definitely not "non-functional". Unless Porsche put a n/f wing on the turbo, 'cause that's what it is. And the interior is not grimy, other than the floor mats which I've already bought replacements for on eBay. It even smells good. And the A/C stays, this is actually a usable automobile.

I'll bet all fluids are original... That thing looks beat to crap. If you have 10K to burn then it could be fun but if the engine lets go that car becomes a very expensive beater quickly.
