AT&T SCREWS iPHONE BUYERS
Just got a report from another buddy that got his this morning and it is still not activated.
The way it works is you get the phone, activate online and wait for the confirmation email. Apparently AT&T's network can't handle the demand. AT&T tells him they did not anticipate the load and he may need to wait up to 48 hours. They are admitting to it. He basically has a $600 brick. Jobs must going thu the roof right now.

After recently merging Cingular and ATT, did you expect a great running company? Everytime this has happened, e.g. Sprint and Nextel, it takes years to recover.......
ATT screwed me a few years ago, so I always expect them to get it wrong......... ![]()

I activated my iPhone in under 10 minutes - fast and flawless.
Given the number of phones that they're selling this weekend, there are bound to be a few glitches. |

Bought it yesterday around 7PM and activated it about 10 minutes later when I got home.
Look, your friend is one guy. Sure there are reports of bad activations, but the large majority of people that have purchased iPhones are happy. This is a completely new product with two large companies trying to work together for the first time in a complex sector - did anyone think that there wouldn't be issues? I was and still am kinda worried about jumping in on a first generation product. I have no doubt that the next generation iPhone will be much better than the initial offering, but I don't regret my purchase. This phone freakin' rocks. |

And I'm not dumping on the phone. The ONLY reason I did not go out today to get mine is the activation issue. I'd rather wait till it's sorted out. Once you start the process you loose your phone service altogether till the activation completes. It's not just that you can't use the iPhone, you can't even use your old one. Can't have that.

If a majority of people were experiencing this issue then we could agree. Most people have no problems activating and using their iPhones. |

May I offer some activities for this guy while he waits for his coveted cell phone service to be reactivated: - Read a book - Go for a walk - Excercise - Talk to someone (as in a real-live person) - Clean up your house/bedroom/your mother's basement--where you live - Get a job - Do yardwork - Sleep - Eat a healthy salad and... -GET A LIFE. -Z-man.

For the record, I have one of those cheep pre-paid phones. I've racked up maybe 15 minutes so far this year. I see no need to watch video of skateboarding dogs as I crash into the car in front of me...

i am not on the bleeding edge myself as i refuse to pay that much for a damn phone - that said if i paid $400 for a phone i wouldn't want to wait 13 hours for the damn thing to work (like a friend of mine just did)

I know of no businessman that needs the ability to give a presentation on an iPhone about said skateboarding dog. That said, if such a businessman did exsist, I assume he would be equipped with a laptop and digital projector that would enable him to more clearly present video of the pooch on the board. Sorry, but I'm not buying it. Quote:
What about 20 years ago when cell phones weren't around? Or years before that when land lines weren't around? How in the world did anyone get work accomplished without being constantly connected to a phone?!?! ![]() Quote:

Don't get me wrong - I consider myself a techno-geek, and I actually carry TWO cell phones in my briefcase - my personal cell phone, and my company-issue black-berry. And I do use the phones from time to time. But there is a fine line between using technology and becoming a slave to technology. The guy I quoted above said he was frustrated becuase his new phone wasn't working, and he was without a phone for about 1 (freakin') hour. He didn't indicate that he needed it for business, so I'm assuming he was just frustrated that his "instant gratification" nature wasn't being properly satisfied. That is what happens when you're a slave to technology. Is 14 hours to wait for cell service a bit long? I suppose if you waited outside an Apple store for 2 days, then yeah -- that extra 14 hours can be long... ![]() ![]() -Z-man.

Yes, I think I would throw that "brick" out the window and sue someone for all the pain and suffering that the 48 hour wait must be causing him.........Someone needs to get their priorities in order. IMHO, anyway.
If he's running a business on a cell phone than I am sure the I-Phone is not his first & only cell phone.

Speaking of cell phones, I just got rid of my Verizon service. They provide great service but I only use about 80 minutes a month. I had Verizon's cheapest plan which gave me 400 minutes a month for 40 bucks a month.
I now have a T-Moble "To Go" plan. I get 1000 minutes a year for $100. a year. I had to buy the phone, a Samsung flip-phone, for $59. so the first year is $159. next year I pay the $100. and get 1150 minutes.......works for me. No long-distance or roaming charges, either. You have your choice of phones, they have a $29. phone or you can spend a couple of hundred if you need all the bells & whistles.

AT&T is now claiming that only "2%" of users have had the delayed activation problem, but I've heard of plenty of folks who have waited over 24 hours... with their number deactivated from the previous carrier.
Cellphones are pretty critical devices for lots of people, just like cars, ATMs and refrigerators. It's pretty petty to slam someone who has a right to expect a carrier to set up and manage a number transfer in hours, if not minutes.
