I was at a ferrari shop where they mounted my new tires on the wheels and while waiting I got to see/hear a bunch of ferrari & lambo. cars so I'm thinking: My car sounds great cause I bought a Dansk muffler and I'm satisfied but I wonder if a Porsche can produce such beautiful exhaust note like the Ferrari...
Is it possible to tune an exhaust system from a flat-6 to sound like a Ferrari?

There is a Ferrari that has been "visiting" someone in my neighborhood -- an F360 I think -- & the sound of that engine, even at just 25 mph, is amazing.
Modern Ferraris have 8- or 12-cylinder engines, which are very different designs than the Porsche flat-6. I think both engines sound incredible in their own way. That Ferrari does sound particularly sweet though....

If you want to here the differences in sound between the Gallordo Superleggera and the 997 GT3 RS, I think you may want to watch this.
Wowzers. http://dailycarvideos.com/2007/06/16/veyron-vs-r8-vs-gt3-vs-db9-and-gallardo/ I think both engines the flat six of the Porsche, and the V10 of the lambo both sound beautiful.

Thanks. Good video. That guy, Chris Harris, is a Porschephile himself and writes for GT Purely Porsche magazine. I've always enjoyed his pieces. Now I see he's a good video host too.

Ferraris and Lambos sound pretty amazing.
This is a cool video demonstrating a couple of sounds of the Carrera GT. This video that most of us have seen is a spectacular video that has a wealth of Ferrari sounds. This video is aural orgasm. I loved the sound of my old '88 3.2L, but the stock exhaust was a bit too quiet. For a while I drove without the muffler. I just put a short bit of pipe on the back of the catalytic conv. At idle and when sedately tooling around it was still pretty quiet, but when you hit the loud pedal it sounded amazing. Sigh, I miss my 911. The miata is enormously fun and a great car, but it's no 911.

Its easy to make your Porsche sound like a V-12. Simply buy a 917 engine and shoehorn it inside the car.
Sound will be absolutely wonderful, if you ever get it to start that is! Getting it to move might be a small problem as well.

As much as I love Porsches, nothing, NOTHING can touch Ferrari for noise. There have been times where a passing Ferrari, even at 40mph, has given me goosebumps from the sound alone.
The other day I passed an Aston Martin V8 going in the other direction. He must have been pushing it pretty hard, because he was high in the rev range. It sounded absolutely fantastic.

Getting back to the basics: Several things affect how an engine can 'sound'. In-line sixes, straight eights, V8, V10, V12, flat sixes, flat 8s, etc. all have different firing orders, cam timing, exhaust pipe configuration, muffler design; by changing any of these variables one can effect the exhaust note/sound.
Manufacturers (especially of exotic cars) do a LOT of experimentation with header pipes, mufflers, converters, etc. to get the sounds they desire ...AFTER the engine design is finished. But you will never get a flat six Porsche engine to sound like a 12 cylinder Ferrari.

I passed a early 70's Ferrari one day when I still had the 911. I think it was a '73 GTC. He was lazily loping along at maybe 50 or 55. The sound was amazing.

Flatheard ford, 3/4 cam, triple strombergs, twin pipes equipped with cherry bomb glasspack mufflers...sweet music indeed!
(edit) That said? Yes, the Ferrari V-12 sound is something else...especially the older cars running webers...

The car sounds that really make the hair stand up on the back of my neck aren't exhaust notes so much as the sound of the actual engine.
Porsche flat 6 Jag inline 6 any ferrari v12 Here's a good example. The first ~20 seconds are pretty much engine & induction noise. At the very end you hear some of the exhaust "burble". It's the engine itself making the fantastic sound there, not just the exhaust: http://www.tomyang.net/cars/275GTB.mpg Did anyone here follow Tom Yang's Ferrari 330GT restoration? IMO, it's among the best online car restoration diaries ever. The Ferrari guru that helped him through the restoration was always working on some pretty exotic stuff. Tom Yang is now working with him f/t. Car nut's dream

Actually given the differences in the # of cylinders and engine layouts, flat vs V, the unmuffled exhaust sound amazingly similar. The reason for that is they are all even fire engines as opposed to the odd fire sequnce of most V8s.

The race exhaust on my SC was unbelievably FANTASTIC at over 3K and full throttle. I went under several concrete overpasses at full throttle, and it sounded like a tuned trumpet crossed with a motocycle. Unfortunately, it resonated so much at under 3K that you couldn't drive through town, and it always gave me a splitting headache without earplugs. It was in essence a double three into two into one unit, if you can call the muffler part of the header system, as I understand that some mufflers do add scavenging to the system.
What I have never seen is three sets of two going into three then one pipe, and I expect it is because you would have to cross from one side of the engine to the other to get the pulses right. I expect that this would lead to a very good sounding and powerful exhaust system, and I wonder if anyone has ever tried it ? |
