Requiem for a Heavyweight

We put Earl down today. Twelve years of his sorry ass following me around the farm

I got to hold him at the end, fitting in that I would have not wanted to be anywhere else but with my boy. His life and mine have been a joy.

I think I posted more yesterday than ever, nervous about the news.

I was blessed to know him, fortunate that he was my dog. There is no remorse in a life well led...he never knew a collar or a chain or a fence: we should all be so lucky.

No sorrow, folks.

That's just poetic and appropos and poignant. It's gotta sting, but that's just because we equate death with stopping. In my faith, our relationship with God and with the animals we were told by Him to name, are special relationships. I have a suspicion that we get to take our pets with us when we go Home.

Aww, sorry to hear this. I'm glad I got a chance to rub his ears and tell him what a good dog he was this summer. Your animals live in an absolute paradise, better than 99.99999% of dogs on earth. He had a great life.

If you believe as I do, when you grieve for for the loss of a loved one, it is for yourself, not them.

They have gone to a better place.

A true Dogs Dog - to this day, a few of my best dogs are still talked about - 30 years later. Earl will live on in the hearts and souls of the ones who hunted, fished, hiked, played ball with and lounged.

Tobra...YOu got that right.

I think I posted this before but I suppose it applies to loved pets as well:

My dad told me many years ago that you cry when a loved one passes for one of two reasons: For all the things you used to do and will never do again, or for all the things you should have done and never got around to.

My dad urged me to make sure I cried for the first reason and never for the second.

Never knew a collar a chain or a fence. very,, very cool. saying good by is a bittch. "no sorrow" a celebration of that relationship as a whole. A couple of dogs and a horse are in that category for me. Savor the good times and use the lessons to enhance the next one.

Sorry to hear this. Seems like a lot of people here are loosing their pets to age. The fact that they had such great lives doesn't make it feel better though. You were lucky to have had him.

SH,

Sorry to hear this but he is having a good time upstairs chasing cats and having fun. You will see him again... and this time hopefully they will be able to talk back to us!

I feel your pain. There is nothing worse than having to say good bye to a companion of so many years. If its an consolation, at least you gave him an easier ending than you will likely have. I remember every single pet of mine today as fondly as when I had them so many years ago.

Thanks, all. I hesitated posting but honestly couldn't think of a better way to celebrate his life.

Your comments confirmed that. Thanks again.

Earl. What a great name for a dog. No chains, no collars, no leashes, no fence. In reality "home" was wherever Earl wanted it to be. For 12 years, he decided "home" was with you. Great dog.

I'd offer to take his place, but I don't compare well to a good lab
