but my favourites would be the McLaren M5 and M7As. I have a great Simon Owen print of Bruce driving the M7A at Spa in '68 - the first McLaren victory.

Have to agree on the Shark-nose Ferrari. That has to be the best looking Grand Prix car of the era.





But it is a close run thing for my favorite which has to be the Lotus 49 - but without the horrible wings please Jim!

I agree, the Lotus 49 to me looks like a "Grand Prix" car should. The wings definitely ruined the look of formula cars. But esthetically, something draws me to the later cars from the 1.5 liter era, specifically the Lotus 25, followed closely by the BRM P61/P261. "Pretty" and "elegent" are the descriptors that comes to my mind.

I'd also give an honorable mention to the Porsche 804, even though it has always struck me has having a touch of an unfinished look to it.





The earlier cars (1950's) cars always struck me as being sort of crude with their upright driving position, wire wheels and front engines. In many ways they have more in common with the 1930's GP cars then the 1960's -- in fact more then a few of the 1950's GP cars were mildly updated 1930's race cars. To me the lone exception is the v16 BRM -- a car that was defined by it's engine. Many say that a car's heart is it's engine -- if this is the case, then what a heart the V16 BRM has. 1.5 liter, V16 with 2 stage supercharging!!! Whoo Hooo!!!

For some reason that car doesn't look at all out of place taking off. It looks just as if that's what it's supposed to do.

Tom Yang's Ferrari Restoration site has an awesome video of a similar 312 F1 car from that year being warmed up. Be sure to turn your PC's volume up to high, because the videos sound is a little dim to get the full affect.

The sounds of the various engines is one of the reasons why I would love to return to an "open" catagory of engines for formula one. This BS of everyone running a V8 will shortly be like Crashcar, with everyone regulated into running the same equipment.

The day the V-12 and other engines last ran at a F-1 event will be a very sad one indeed.
