Putting the Volvo Back Together Again...

Some of you helped out when I couldn't get the tailshaft flange off my Volvo's tranny rear housing (Volvo Tranny Tail Seal Repair - I'm Stumped!)

Well, I am in the process of putting it back together again. The flange that is "supposed to slide right on and off" is not going back on the shaft very easily; not a surprise, since I needed a 3-arm puller to get it off in the first place. I cleaned out the spindles, used grease, and it still only will budge a millimeter every 10 mins or so - using a rubber mallett.

Any other suggestions on how to get the damn thing on faster? Are there any mechanical presses I could get that are as cheap and easy to use as the 3-arm puller?

You might try to freeze it.

Block of wood and a 3lb hammer. Rubber mallets absorb too much of the blow.

I think you mean heat it in an oven. This flange goes over the splined shaft yes?

Whoops, yes on the shaft usually means over, my mistake. Heat the flange or freeze the shaft. If you can't get the shaft in the freezer, you need a bigger freezer.

well, if i work it down the shaft far enough, i can start tightening it down with the retaining bolt. kind of like a puller in reverse... but i will try the block of wood and the hammer.

And i don't think i'm putting anything in the freezer. The shaft is attached to the transmission...

clean the mating surfaces VERY well. use a little lubricant.

if it goes into something else, freeze it.

if it goes around something else, heat it up.

kind of like directions for sex...

Heat the OD in an oven 450-500. Put dry ice on the ID. It will go together easy.

Are you sure there isn't a burr somewhere causing it to hang up?
