Next euro project......DunDaDaaaa...

One of our surveyors has a 72' 914 that has been sitting for a few years behind his office. I finally inquired about it and he is going to cut me a nice deal for it and a whole other parts car.

It needs some rust repair, which will be fun but I'd also like to upgrade the crappy 1.8. I would love a 3.2 but I'm not will to invest 10k into motor for a toy 914. So I have been thinking about doing a ROTARY!

I've always wanted to build one. I'd like to go with individual carbs (no EFI). I'm not all that familar with rotarys so fill me in on the motor I need for 200 hp NA.

If Cesiro is around maybe he can help.

yeah, a smooth running mazda rotary is pretty slick. i used to run a '91 rx-7 convertible. you'll have a blast. anyone else put a rotary into a 914 that you've found in searches here?

I think it would be easier to do a suby - but a rotary would be cool - they are definitely small enough

I found a bunch on 914world.com. Seems like a real easy swap compared to the V8.

If they had a carb'd subie motor I would be all over it. I really just don't want to deal with EFI wiring again (BMW w/ MS was brutal)

Good to see you saving another one from the scrap heap!

Still miss my old 914. Hope to have another one someday, but this time with a 6 cylinder engine in it!

Whats your budget?

I think a Renesis engine out of an RX8 would be the best engine but that will get you 230+HP N/A

Getting 200HP N/A out of a 13B block can be done with some porting work but be prepared for a pretty loud car.

I know of a guy in California that is doing a Rotary swap into a 914 I want to say he was using a 3 rotor n/a rotary.

Don't eliminate using a stock turbo 13BT engine. They come from the factory with 200HP and can bee tweeked just a tiny bit and you'll have an easy 200 to the wheels and way more torque. Food for thought.

I should be doing some little road trips next week breaking in my engine I'll see about a across the state one and we can discuss this over lunch one day.

Based on following your turbo 3 series thread I'd say you have the technical ability to see it through. Sounds like fun! SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT

I read some of your follow up answers.

You want an 12A engine out of a 1st gen if you want to go carb, or you can go 13B out of a 2nd gen with a carb conversion. Racing Beat sells the entire manifold.

Quote:
Holley Intake Kit for 1984-92 13B 6-Port Engines*

Racing Beat’s Holley Intake Systems, offered for more than 25 years, have established themselves as an ideal way to increase the horsepower output of a 12A or 13B rotary engine at a very economical price, this is especially advantageous when compared to the alternative: expensive fuel injection systems with their required software, hardware and increased complexity.

We offer a Racing Beat-engineered and modified Holley Carburetor Intake Kit for all 1984-92 13B 6-Port engines. These kits are a popular and economical alternative for a failed fuel injection system on a stock engine. The complete kit includes an extensively modified 600 CFM Holley carburetor (manual choke), a Racing Beat cast aluminum manifold, the popular Racing Beat Power Pulse Air Filter Canister with filter, basic throttle, and metering oil pump linkages (1984-88 applications), gaskets, and detailed installation instructions.

The Holley-supplied 600 CFM carburetor that is included in this kit has been disassembled and re-tuned at the Racing Beat facility to our specifications to optimize the power output for the 13B 6-port application. This carburetor features mechanical secondaries and a manual choke.

Depending on your application, you may need to fabricate or purchase specific components to complete installation for your particular application.

Fuel Pump - You will need to purchase and install a fuel pump that provides a 6 PSI delivery with a minimum 20 GPH rating - selection will depend largely on installation location. The stock fuel pump unit is designed to provide high pressure (40+ PSI) for a fuel injected intake and is not compatible with this carburetor application. It is NOT recommended that a fuel regulator be used to reduce the stock fuel pump pressure to 6 PSI- the stock pump will fail. We recommend the Mallory 4070M fuel pump for this application.

1984-85 GSL-SE – The stock fuel pump on this chassis is externally mounted (outside of the fuel tank) and must be replaced with a suitable unit and the appropriate fuel line fittings.

1986-92 (All models) – The fuel pump on this chassis is mounted internally in the fuel tank. The pump must be replaced with an appropriate internally mounted unit, or an external pump configuration must be designed and fabricated. (Moderate fabrication skills are required for this conversion.)

Manual Choke Mechanism - Installation of a manual choke can be accomplished using the Holley Choke Control Cable and In-car Mounting Bracket.

Exhaust – Optimum performance from the installation of this kit requires that a performance exhaust system be installed on the vehicle. The following exhaust configurations are ranked in order of performance potential:

1. Long primary header - dual-tube connecting pipe – rear muffler(s). (i.e. Road/Race Exhaust System)
2. Streetable Header/Presilencer - y-pipe – rear mufflers.
3. Downpipe/Presilencer - y-pipe – rear mufflers.

This intake kit is not intended for use on applications that retain the catalytic converters and stock exhaust system. If the stock exhaust system is retained, horsepower, throttle response, and performance will be compromised. This kit does not make provisions for the operation of the Mazda-installed cruise control unit.

BTW- The mechanic I used to do up my Turbo is a master with the 1st generation engines and stuff, he is an expert on which manifold is the best with which engine parts etc..

Anything you want to know let me know. You should use him for your engine. His name is JR and his phone # is 772-343-0510 his company is called Just Racing Fabrications, tell him you are a friend of mine. I will be by his shop Wed afternoon and I will tell him to watch for your call. This guy is super honest and VERY smart when it comes to the rotaries, he can build you a really nice engine. Plus he has tons of 1st gen parts so anything you might need, he has.

Thanks Jim. I have been doing research (instead of work ) and I think a 12A might be the way to go.

I think you are onto something with the noise though. I've heard rotary on track cars and they are insanely loud. I'll have to check into a decent exhaust.

One of the best mufflers ever made for a Rotary engine is called a Turbo.

If your project was my project I would put a 13B Turbo in it. then wire it with a Wolf 3D and you will have a monster in your hands. It will be quiet, powerful and have some nice torque.

Terry,

I just found out the Star Mazdas use VW variation gearboxes. They are called Hewland Gearboxes.

I was talking with JR today about one of my work trucks and mentioned you to him. He told me about the gearbox and agreed with me about using a 13B Turbo motor.

There is a place in Hallandale Beach in Miami that imports engines from Japan, we have had really good luck with this guy, every engine we have purchased from him has been rock solid.

I am gonna take a little Pelican Time out. If you need anything, or info from me E-mail me you got the addy.

Thanks Jim, enjoy the vacation.

Kennedy Adapters make a kit to mount the 12A or 13B to the 901. They also make one to adapt to a 915 but then you need to shorten the tranny which is very expensive for some reason ($10,000), from what I've read.

I'm thinking a 12A with the 901 for starters. Should be as easy as making the motor mounts and hooking up the fuel and electrics.

Come to find out the car has a 2.0 with less than 1000mi (before is was parked). I'm temped to MS it and throw on a t3 turbo but I'd sure like to do a rotary.

Either way I have some time to decide.
