Those who are so critical of the position taken by the "moralists" really need to read the first post in this thread. No where does it mention that the price was "out the door, including all taxes." It wasn't until some people stated he should pay the tax that we get the full story. This isn't the first thread where a fact scenario is amended when the opinions get harsh.

A dealer ought to know better. Their mistake, they eat it. Pretty straightforward to me. What's the problem?

Where does this stupidity end? When the sales guy calls you up at home sobbing that he "should have asked for more for the car" and forgot to and now his three kids are starving and won't you please, please help him out?

Forget it. He negotiated an out-the-door price, they can live with it. They'll just end up making it up on the next sucker anyway.

I said well it's an honest mistake, and I doubt very much the taxman will notice it - so why don't we just pretend we didn't spot the error.

The dealer says, well that is tax fraud, and we're a public company and cannot get involved in this sort of thing etc.

I say it wasn't fraud. It was an honest mistake. And here's what I'll do: I give you my undertaking that if the taxman notices the mistake and sends you an invoice for the $900, I will pay this. And the dealer knows I'm good for this.

I didn't dicker much on the price, and took no more than an hour of the salesman's time. We knew what we wanted, and bought a few options etc - so I'm sure they made a pretty penny on the deal. And they are not out of pocket. And they're covered in the highly unlikely event the error ever sees the light of day.

The dealer tried to get hard-nosed with me in the end, and I told him I would drop by on Monday for a coffee. But I think my position is fair.

What do you think?

You can tell us "moralists" that we don't know what we're talking about but if you read the text in the original post it's readily apparent that his intention was to not pay the taxes if the government didn't catch on. That is what formed my judgement of the situation.

Here's what you're missing. The dealership forgot to collect the tax the BUYER owes. The buyer still owes it. The dealer simply tell the State, "Ooops! But we do have his address, SSN, and phone number."

Me too. But you know what? One of the great things about forums such as this is they pretty much reveal people for who they really are. You get to see people "in the round" very quickly.

Thanks for your support BTW - but I am definitely through with this thread
