I've been saying this for years. All new laws should have expiration dates and preferably there should be two stricken from the books for every new one passed. Our society has gotten so ridiculously over-regulated today it'd make our forefathers pine for the rules of Colonial Britain (which they rebelled against).

I'm lucky that Fidel's best is only 2 hours away in Canada! ;)

Here is the link to email your senators. If you've ever enjoyed a cigar or you dislike the concept of being ass raped by these clowns in DC please write.

Anyone know offhand what the federal tax at present is on cigars vis-a-vis cigarettes?

Jesus Christ there are a lot of panties all bunched up on this thread. and of course a lot of disinformation.

Not only was this initiated by a republican (guess all the constituents who voted Smith in are RINO's too ), but congress is actually doing something decent with the money. And they aren't just borrowing it from China Bush style to fund the State Children's Health Insurance Program. They're taxing a luxury, like boats, and an unhealthy luxury at that.

Some facts: cigars are currently taxed at 4.8 cents per cigar. WTF is that about? that's not a tax, that's a nuisance. the tax is going up to 53% with a max tax of $10 per cigar. That's substantial, I'll grant you. A $5 cigar is now going to cost you $7.50. Live with it.

The State Children's Health Insurance Program is administered by Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, under the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. The program's stated purpose is to "provide $24 billion in federal matching funds over 10 years to help states expand health care coverage to over 5 million of the nation's uninsured children." Its authorization expires Sept. 30. Senators have been in discussion about the program's particulars, including how to fund it and, possibly, how to fund an expansion of it.

yeah, get those emails of outrage put together.

Ahhh, when we were around to wipe the shi-te off of your arse you were very trusting. Thanks for the support bucko...

Now regarding the cigars, these jerks need to be recalled and dismissed from office. All of them, the whole lot and put in term limits. One 6 year term in office, any govt office and you are done, no more govt work, period.

I enjoy a good cigar with friends every now & then and I don't think that I should be punished :mad:by an unfair tax. The whole Luxury Tax is a crock, If you are buying a boat, you are already spending a good nit in taxes, then add the other cost, a slip, maintnance, fuel, ect, all of which keeps not only tax $$$ rolling in, but people working. It is wrong to punish someone for working hard and doing well, they should be used as an example of what hard work will get you!!! The RINO and other POSs who are supporting this crock of a tax need to get off the crack pipe (now there is something they should tax) and quit dumping on the high achivers to buy votes:mad:

it always amazes me when folks b!tch about a $7 cigar but they are just fine with Bush giving Musharef $10 billion over the last 6 years with no ROI.

Priorities. Think about the kids this money will help. Sometimes it's not just about "Me".

So you say I owe the these do-gooder bastards this money 'cause I want to smoke & cause they are "for the children?" Here's another concept, don't push out more babies than you can afford. Since it's my money you refer to refer to when when you say "live with it," what about BLOW ME?

At least you are consistent with your pc homies by thinking that you have better intentions for (and more rights to) the money I've earned.

that's not really what I'm saying, but I know it makes you feel good, so go with it. I'm just tired of people like you whining like a little school girl over a $7 cigar. "waahhhhh, poor me, me, me, me, me.":(:(:(:(:(:(

Why can't we decide for ourselves which charity to donate to? The last thing I want is the government deciding for me, then proceeding to waste 90% of the money.

Mule 07-26-2007 05:46 AM

What don't you get. I'm willing to pay the cost of the cigar. I'm not willing to give these rat bastards any more of my money for bull***** pet projects. Simple!

Pet projects like $10 billion to Musharef? those kinds of pet projects? or half a $ trillion for Iraq?

yeah, those are great pet projects that are paying real dividends.

Mule 07-26-2007 06:07 AM

And you want to give them more of my money! Get it?

berettafan 07-26-2007 06:11 AM

+10 to shaun's initial post.

Probably the most salient point made in this entire thread. If charities are truly worthwhile, truly help the intended recipients, well managed and efficient, then they should be able to attract donations on their own. When our gubmint feels the need to forcefully extract money from its productive citizens (by any means) to support charities of its choosing, one can bet they are none of these things. One can bet that they are simply not worthwhile enough to attract support on their own, absent gubmint coersion. One can bet that they are almost exclusively supporting our unproductive citizens; citizens that are unproductive by virtue of their own choosing. It is a system that punishes the motivated and rewards the unmotivated; a system that would never survive without big gubmint supporting it.
