Quick...asphalt seal coat...apply wet is OK?

It's been raining out my way, and I have seal coaters coming this afternoon. I just called their dispatch and said the driveway is going to be wet, but the lady said it wasn't a problem since the stuff is water based. She also said that the stuff you get from Home Depot and such places actually states that the drive way should be wetted down.

I've never looked into doing this myself so I don't know jack about it. I have a new asphalt driveway and an older (sealed previously) section. Water based our not, if the the surface is wet and saturated, any sealant is not likely to fully adhere, right?

Help...I have a few hours until they come...I can send them away and reschedule, but I'd like to get this over with.

The lady is right about the Home Depot/Lowes stuff. You do wet down the driveway. On the other hand it also says not to apply if it is going to rain. I think most of the professional sealers go down after the drive is swept, powerwashed and then cracks sealed, but not on a wet drive. I would sure check with the applicators and get a guarantee (for what that is worth) before I would allow them to proceed.

I power washed my all the asphalt last night, as they said they will just use a leaf blower to clean before applying. They will have to seal and then apply the hot sealant.

I'm leaving the office now so I can be there when they come. I'm going to demand a written warranty. This is likely going to be the biggest driveway they will do in a while...so it's going to be worth my money!

Make Sure its Grease Free!!!

Souk,

Main thing, get the grease off the asphalt if there is any. That slurry is water based and dries like latex paint. Its adhesion is only as good as the sub straight is clean, dirt free and especially grease free. Other than that, its like painting your driveway...No big deal...

Cool. Thank Bob. I went after all the grease spots and such with the power washer thinking that they will prevent good adhesion. Now, if the sealing crew is made up of a bunch of Asians, I'll be golden!

Actually I thought of a good comeback...but I wont because I'm obviously still in the dog house.
