TOYOTA Tundra ext cab....buy/trade
I am looking to buy a used Toyota Tundra, possibly using my 911 as a trade in...what do you fellas think I should look for? I like the Tundra, but not sure I can get the full amount and I don't want a car payment.

The used tundras are very good trucks but they have weak points.
BRAKES! The brakes on my 2002 were weak and had a tendency to fade on a steep hill even if i wasn't hauling or towing anything. the rotors warped and started a vibration after 40k. The folks on the tundra forums suggest that the problem is really in the rear drum brakes, they think the self adjusting drum brakes don't adjust so the fronts have to do almost all the braking and they are not up to it. BTW the same years of tacomas reportedly had bad brake problems also. The transmission in my tundra was replaced at 35k (for free) but that may have been an exception and not typical. I have a 2007 tundra now, if you can swing it I would definately recommend getting one. They are twice the truck as the earlier model. |

thanks for the input, really wish they had 4 wheel disc brakes as I hate working on drums.

Did they all have rear drums? I can't hardly believe that, my 2000 Silverado has 4 wheel discs and it's a GM product. My '03 4Runner had 4 wheel discs as well.
Why dump the 911? Tundra is about as nice as trucks come, but it's still no 911. Also, don't dream of trading it in. Book value for classic cars is never as high as selling value, ie you will get bent over.

Matt I was thinking more of trade with an individual, I agree I would lose if used as a trade in. I am getting divorced, and moving to Montana this month...this is just the tip of the iceberg. I ship the 911 to Dallas next week, hope to have something lined up as I get in Montana in two weeks.

The 2007s have 4 wheel disc, 12" front and 11 1/2" rear IIRC with massive 4 piston calipers in the front that make big reds look like 914 calipers. When I first got it I had to learn to drive differently because I kept hitting the brakes too hard and kicking in the anti-lock system.
My 2002 had drums in the rear and I don't think they changed that until 2007 but I may be wrong. One other thing i hated about my 2002: it was a TRD version with a limited slip differential. The darned thing would chirp the inside rear tire waaaay too easily. Just turning the corner or accellerating from a stop with a little exuberance would chirp the tires. I figured it would get me a ticket some day but I got lucky. Last edited by sammyg2; 08-09-2007 at 12:39 PM.. |
