Frigging Wonderful...

Now the "lets drive slow to save the trees" gang is using Google to search out posts that PP members have made to use against them...

well, I'll probably be in the vast minority, but when has that stopped me before.

I quit doing group drives and any "canyon carving" a couple years ago. Two main reasons. First was I started getting serious about driving on the track, and found that there was no way I could safely get anywhere near the limit of the car on public streets. Secondly, and probably more important, I saw some of the most idiotic driving of my life during "spirited" group runs. It got to the point where I frankly feared for my own safety, as well as other motorists, pedestrians, and god forbid we should come upon bicyclists.

I have always enjoyed getting together with other owners and bsing about cars. And I love being at the track driving the crap out of cars with other like minded individuals. But that's about it...the group dynamic seems to bring out the worst in some people, and public roads are not the place for it.

ymmv

Switch cars to bikes and that is me.
The interesting or scary thing is using stuff posted on the interwebs in news media. Lots of moronic behaviour to choose from

I have been on both types of drives. First time I met you was on the Thanks Giving Day run back in '05. I have since met you two other times, but not while driving. I had always hoped to get to see you again on a run, but also have known you gave them up.

If you don't want to see the idiotic stuff, stay towards the back with the slower group and enjoy the scenery

One thing these articles don't mention, are the fact that most of the spirited drives tend to happen early in the morning to AVOID traffic. These canyons will not let most people reach the capacities of their cars and that you are better off on a closed track for that, I know I had a blast at Willow on a closed track, not worrying about cats, dogs, children, bad drivers ... At the same time, the local roads can be fun at a slower pace and with a few cars, not the big groups. I have been out early on Mulholland Hwy, these past two months and have not been out of control, but take the corners faster than I would in my Toyota.

Todd, even if you don't go for any group drives, you should at least consider showing up for some BSing or meet at the lunch spot.

"If you don't want to see the idiotic stuff, stay towards the back with the slower group and enjoy the scenery"

I haven't been on any car group outings but have made a number with motorcycles. My favorite position is at the end (ride drag). If it's only three or four riders and I know their riding style I may shuffle up. And toy runs? I've never been so uncomfortable on a bike in my life.
Making contact with the guy in front is an absolute 'no'. There was a T-bucket gathering in my town last weekend. During a group run (while on a 4-lane section) one ran into the back of another. There's no excuse for that.

What's the big deal, this only effects the exotic car owners in la-la land. Those of us back on the ugly east coast can still drive the back roads like it's prohibition and not have to worry.

And you guys thought no one was reading your posts but other pelicans. I wouldn't be surprised if that picture of fastpaste isn't on some PO wall in the most wanted category down in good olde Travelers Depressed, SC.

Just think of those poor bastards that have confessed to fixing tickets and not paying luxury taxes and what the fuch ever, better move to another state. And you thought Big Brother wasn't paying any attention to your behavior.

This is more fun than a photo speeding ticket.

Not knowing the area I have to ask... The statistics the article quoted about the two deaths and 60 accidents... how does that compair to the boardering roads where canyon carving" doesn't take place. Seems to me that these are pretty low numbers considering the type of road and abundace of people "site seeing".

Wait a minute, did they just reprint copyrighted content from this forum without permission?

I believe that they just quoted it. But the damage is done when LE reads it and takes names, not when it winds up in a news article.

Hmmm. Im one of the ones who works operation safe canyons on the weekends. I'm going to have to look out for that Jack Olsen fella, Early black RSR look car right.

Seriously, Every weekend there is an accident up in the canyon and probably for every one that is reported there are a few where they pick up there bike or back there car off a tree and don't report it.

That early morning run thru the canyons is also the time the bikers like to ride thru there for the same reasons.

I have to agree with Todd about some of the group rides. I've seen some pretty agressive driving also.

"Bee hives collapse"

"The Santa Monica Mountain Messenger"? LOL… why their readers must number in the hundreds!

I liked the article on Honeybee Colony Collapse Disorder linked at the bottom. I am leaning toward insecticides over cell phone towers.

There are roads around here that are well known to drivers interested in a bit more involving experience. They get patrolled, people crash, Darwin often vindicated, sometimes citations are given
