Yikes! Glad to hear you are OK, though. Looks like the car's 'bout ready for a couple rattlecans of Krylon, some fake Fuchs, and a listing on ebay. ;) Let us know what you find on the post-mortem.

craigster59 07-31-2007 07:07 AM

Sorry for your loss Jeff. But when one door closes, another opens. Time to start looking for that 911..

File a claim, get your money, buy the car back, get an engine from Lindsey Racing, and build yourself a track car.

+1, life gives you lemons, make lemonade

Porsche-O-Phile 07-31-2007 07:45 AM

Maybe. . . Although the allure of a flat six is enticing, especially given that I have two other 944s to focus on. One (the red one, late '85) is decently set up for daily driving duty and needs little to complete (install stereo, fix hood latch, register it and that's about it). The other is my Callaway turbo conversion. The $$$ from the 951 (assuming I get anything worthwhile out of it) would go nicely towards completing my Callaway project, including paint work and so-forth. I'd then have a decent n/a 944 and a pretty unique, well-built "collectible" 944 (if there is such a thing).

Or I pitch the whole mess, pocket a nice chunk of money and go buy a 911. Don't know yet.

legion 07-31-2007 07:50 AM

Jeff, all are good plans.

And take your time. I had my insurance check two days after the fire. Make sure you don't rush to replace your old car. Think about what you want. Take a few cars for test drives. You are in an area flush with Porsches, so it's okay to walk away from a solid car for a good deal if you're not sure you want to go that direction.

So that you can preserve your policy with an insurance company that's not there when you need them?

Porsche-O-Phile 07-31-2007 08:19 AM

Unfortunately, the reality is you do need coverage, like it or not. Or you can post $50,000 cash bond with the DMV, but that's not an option for me.

I'll call them in a while and give them the old, "hypothetically speaking. . . Let's just say one of my cars burst into flames. . . "

the 07-31-2007 08:59 AM

If the car bursts into flames because a 20 year old fuel line bursts, it's covered.

If the car throws a rod through the block because a 20 year old rod bolt bursts, that's not covered.

But if it throws a rod through the block AND bursts into flames, covered!

Hey, I can't believe nobody said it yet.....

THAT should buff right out.....(sorry I know how much everyone loves that one).

Seriously, sorry to see your ride meet such an untimely end.....glad you weren't hurt.

Good luck with getting everything settled and finding a new toy!

Damn, thats terrible man.

GO DAWG GO 07-31-2007 09:05 AM

Jeff,

Think flat six...I could see that gleem in your eye lastnight. Get your two 944's going and tell the wife its time for the 911. She's feeling sorry for you at the moment...seize it..

Porsche-O-Phile 07-31-2007 09:14 AM

How diabolical. I like it.

I'd probably have to pitch the red car and possibly my motorcycle in order to justify that, but maybe. . . just maybe. . .

Gotta' think about it some. Maybe it's time for some housecleaning.

If I did that, I'd have my Callaway 944 and could give my MB to the wife (she likes it), so she'd have that and her Toyota daily driver. I'd have something (911?) and the Callaway 944, so two vehicles apiece.

Might be able to swing that. Lemmee think about it. Been thinking about thinning the herd a bit lately anyway (more cars than time - want to simplify somewhat).

Book value is supposedly only about $4500 and I know they're going to cheap-ass me down from there. This is gonna' suck. I'd be surprised if I walk away with more than $3k in my pocket when this is all done. I friggin' hate insurance companies.

trekkor 07-31-2007 09:15 AM

I'd be crying right now.

Glad you are OK.

Ever driven a 914-6? Pretty cheap and easy to build...Big fun.

Jeff, that sucks... could be worse, at least you don't have to buy Long Beach a new sign ala Pokey's accident (inside joke).

We should get together for beers sometime... although we were in the Belmont brewery at the same time once abut never ran into each other. ;)

Robert, over the bridge? I'm in SP where are you?

GO DAWG GO 07-31-2007 09:52 AM

Scottmandue,

I'm next to Jeff at Long Beach airport. Didnt you see our thread yesterday about happyhour? Thats where Jeff was heading when the illegal aliens incendiary went off. :D

rouxroux 07-31-2007 09:52 AM

Sorry to hear/see that Jeff. I guess you'll have to modify your signature now.

Porsche-O-Phile 07-31-2007 09:55 AM

Yea I tried to modify it earlier but apparently the new server has some new limitation on it whereby it only lets you have five lines of text in your sig, so if you touch it, you'll lose a lot of stuff. Apparently signatures "as-is" are grandfathered in against this new restriciton, so I have to put some thought into how to pack the info. into a 5-line sig cleanly.

Zeke 07-31-2007 09:57 AM

Holy moly, I drove right past this incident and saw Jeff on his cell standing next to the to the car. He was probably calling Bob at that very moment. I had no idea what kind of car it was from the front and the tunnel more or less blocked my view as I went by. I've never met Jeff, so I didn't know who was standing there. I feel badly that I didn't realize this was a 951 and he WAS ON HIS WAY TO MEET US!! He was literally within a 1000 feet of our meeting place.

Look closely at the last pic. That's me in the red Boxster. Am I stupid or what??!!

That is terrible news, Jeff. Cancel all meetings with Pelicans!

GO DAWG GO 07-31-2007 10:17 AM

Milt,

Thats is a way liberal gestimation..he was within 400 feet. I noticed your car in the picture too. had a good talk last night. Your alright!

Jeff,

I cant believe I drove my car through those police officers standing around looking at us on Spring Street full of beer breath...Remember?

Did you go to Rockbottom's after I left? You handled that better than me. I owe you a few brother!
