The Fog of War
Anyone seen it?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fog_of_War Quite an amazing film. Incredible archival footage and perspective. This is not at all like a Michael Moore film. |

One of my favorite documentaries.
Very carefully and tastefully crafted. I certainly left with a newfound respect for McNamara, and an appreciation for tough decisions made in very complex times. Considering the one-person format, I thought the filmaker balanced it very well by asking some pretty tough questions... but very respectfully.

despite the naysayers, it is hard to watch the film and not ponder our current situation in Iraq. The rule #1 about haing empathy for your enemy, and his realization that the North Vietnamese hated the Chinese and considered the US as yet another imperialist like the French is potent stuff.
Great insight into the mind of a brilliant guy in a very difficult job under insane conditions. Doesn't make Johnson look very good. |

[QUOTE=nostatic;3415962] his realization that the North Vietnamese hated the Chinese
QUOTE] Wow I didn't realize that anybody else realized that! So when the Dummies claim that the Chinks were ready to join the Viets if we crossed over into N Viet are just showing their Dummytude.

And the personal toll it took on McNamara. That is/was a man with many demons.

Tabs,
I'm not so sure the Chinese wouldn't have moved to 'protect their South Asian Communist Brethern', if the US had made an over-the-border excursion. Think of the shifting alliances in WW II when Russia went from German ally to invadee. The North Vietnamese wouldn't have wanted the Chinese to be there in the first place and would be afraid they would stay, but they would have welcomed the support. Les

The movie is very thought provoking...McNamara's 1996 book was an attempt by him to slavage his reputation.
Mac omitted a few salient points and completely tarnished his reputation with others...

Erroll Morris' documentaries are all worth watching.
Fog of War was staggering. The new book about Nixon and Kissinger gives more detail on Nixon's maneuvering to save face in departing from an 'unwinnable' Vietnam for *four years and 23,000 American lives* after he decided to pull out.
