Canada Fishing

Many thanks to all you avid fishermen on the advice you gave me prior to my trip to Northern Saskatchawan. It was a great trip and one of the best fishing experiences of my life. I'll likely be going back next year. Just got a CD of pics from a friend I fished with. Tell me if this looks like fun

You look great, Mark! Sporting that genuine wilderness look. The catch looks fantastic. How many pounds?

I love fishing too. Friend of mine inherited money and a rather vast piece of land with mostly wood and a large private lake. We use to get out in a rowing boat for a whole day. Being private land and lake we are all alone. Quite astonishing feeling. No one but yourself and the sounds of nature. Among others we catch a lot of that sort of fish you are holding in the picture. They do not give up without a fight!

Is that a Muskie? Looks like fun, did you try flyfishing?

Next year stay on the West Coast and you can get into this kind of action:

Queen Charlotte Islands in Northern BC. 30-50 lb. King Salmon are common (but 25-35 are average), 8-10 lb. Coho's are caught at will and there is also an abundance of halibut, ling cod and other rockfish. If you're not putting a couple hundred pounds into your freezer to enjoy during the winter months, something's wrong.

Looks like fun though catching big pike, muskies, and walleye up there in SK.

Those Salmon look like fun and deee-lish. The cabin I went to is owned by my Vet School room mate from some 40 years ago. He's had the land lease for 35 years. Great bunch of guys are regulars there and I hope to be a regular. BC, however is likely the prettiest province in Canada. Sadly I don't do well on the Ocean ;-)

This one in the pic is a Northern Pike (38"..no wt. but likely 25+) but they are closely related to Muskie as I understand it. Did not fly fish and only tried it a few times. Not sure I have the coordination to do well at it...

Markus,
Thanks for the comment...'-) I have spent some time in the South of Sweden in the distant past but sadly not fishing. Your experience on that lake sounds wonderful. I also enjoyed the Loons in the AM and the howling of wolves at night. When I was visiting Goteborg I used to go regularly to the 'Fish Church" on the wharf and take photos of the rugged but smiling fishermen and the glistening catch. Neat place for sure and I suppose still there.

Mark;
Looks like you had a great trip. The slam of a nice Pike is one of the most exciting things I can think of and the fight is almost always awesome if they have any size at all. And then comes the realization, "I have to get it into the boat & I can see all those teeth".
It is addictive, isn't it?

Mike,
Nice to hear from you... You were one of the most helpful on gear and lures. Yep, ya' think you have a car on the other end of the line...even he 20" ones put up a fight. The teeth...esp. the back ones...look about like cat's teeth. Nothing like it. My other Vet friend caught a 45" Northern. He and I may get a model made up...fiberglass or graphite. You have any tips on who does good ones?

This is the 45" monster...

Mark, I was just at Misinipe a month ago on the way back from Reindeer Lake. Nothing like jigging for lunkers in 800' of water(Deep Bay). Did you try Otter Rapids just a few km's from Misinipe? You don't get the big spawners there but I've never seen fish bite like that place - you'll get eight fish every ten casts I swear.

If you're ever this way again, my cousin runs a fishing excursion company and his 700hp jet boat will take you places the Indians don't even know about(and float planes won't land)- with absoloutely mind blowing action. Lemme know!

There's always a bigger fish...

Camping 60 miles up Reindeer Lake...

Crappy pic but here's the best way to get around in N. SK

Mark;
Our guy in Manitoba uses these people for fish, moose & bear.

www.permatrophy.com

If you have questions about his work, contact Russ Bettschen - piketales@embarqmail.com & he can help you out and/or hook you up.

45" is a dandy fish and probably put up one hell of a struggle.
