I wurked for an sciense techer todey...
He was showing me the 2nd of two electric lawn mowers that had quit because the pig tail plug had fried. He was going to buy a 3rd when I said REPLACE THE MALE PLUG END!!
Then I told him to get a decent extension cord so it wouldn't get hot and do this continually. Better a 50' than a 100. And definitely at least 14 ga. That seemed to make sense to him after I explained this to the physical science teacher. BW,TM... he teaches at the college level! Lord help us. |

LOL, I have a resume on my desk from a college professor.
It says he's making $58.30 / hour but he wants to work for me for $31.50 / hour. The strange part is where he lists his education. He's attending a local community college but hasn't earned a degree yet, and it's the same community college where he is listed as a professor. Do community colleges hire professors that are still working on their AA degree? This isn't university of phoenix or something, this is a real school. No, I don't think he's getting an interview. |

Teachers think they can because they teach.

My future brother-in-law was an admissions adviser for them. In the last year, he has also been a bike shop tech, a diesel mechanic, and an Amway guy...
And no, he does not have a college degree...and I'm not sure about high school.

Well, having both taught and "done" science (now practicing/applying
health science to people), I'll say that for me, effective and efficient teaching is far more time and energy consuming than just taking care of issues in person. I'm pretty fortunate in that I only have to teach people who have risen to the top of their professions. However, if one is willing to consider the general population of most grade/middle/high schools today, teachers are perhaps among the least appreciated individuals around. Many people see them as being paid to parent (and perhaps teach a bit if there is time)...something a ton of DNA donors/recipients refuse to do anymore. Just my $0.02. |

Not the majority.
But, as in everything, the bad ones stand out far more then the good ones. I have had dealings with a phd metallurgist / university professor who fits your description to a tee. He also has moonlighted some consulting for NASA and other government agencies. He is the living, breathing poster boy for the proverbial $5000 toilet seat. I cringe to think of the tax payers money he has flushed. He is a foreign born resident who claims to not even like America but does brag about how easy it is to take money from the government. Writing this has now ruined my evening. |

Whew. I was worried we'd missed the regular "teacher-bashing" post

I am TEACHER with a local college but I teach welding so not the same as gen ed but I can tell you it is amazing to see all different types. some of the people with degrees are idiots and some that teach from experience are just as bad. so to tell you the truth the degrees mean nothing as you can have it either way it is the person and what they do with their knowledge

Ummm, it's pretty true. Come visit my college, where all of our PhDs are guys that couldn't hack it in industry. Their teaching consists entirely of book knowledge, with no application experience. Therefore, it is nearly worthless, because 90% of theory is of no use in the real world.

Some of the stupidest things I have seen people do were done by doctors. What did he do with the other lawnmower? You could put a new cord on it and sell it

And anyone who has ever taught you anything couldn't hack it in the real world. Whatever. If Peyton Manning took up coaching after he retires, would the same be true? Not likely. And at any quality university, there are many PH.D's who work in industry, too. I could introduce you to many who were and are exceptionally successful in both endevours, by all measures. Anyway, carry on with the regular teacher-bashing. I shouldn't have responded to the trolling . . . |

One of my coworker's father is a doctor. He bought an unused sorrority house a few years ago as an "investment". The neighborhood, fearful of the return of a sorrority to the house, got it rezoned as a "single occupancy residence". He didn't bother to show up for the hearing. It has 23 bedrooms and 17 bathrooms. He can't sell it because no one wants a house that big so close to campus...except for fraternities and sorrorities or apartments, which it is no longer zoned for. I've heard more stories than I can count about him running out of gas while flying... Once he even left his plane at an airport and rented another plan while halfway through a trip because of mechanical problems. He's on his third mistress in 17 years...and is the father of four children ranging from 10-28.
