I got it last year and I get notifications now and then when I have to use my SS # for something. Seems reasonable to me...

LifeLock CEO Had His Own Identity Stolen Numerous Times, Suit Alleges « Dvorak News Blog

I've read up on it previously, seems it is just a for-pay service for stuff you can do yourself.

As an aside, when I was looking to refinance this summer, one of the lenders tried to sneak a credit monitoring service subscription into the deal. I called him on it, he tried to tell me he didn't know what it was, that it was something "standard" in their contracts. I severed the deal right then and there.

I tried LifeLock...lol... here's what happened.
When I purchased LL I was told wheneven "anyone" tried to obtain credit using my SS, credit, etc, I would receive a call on my cell phone.
About a month later the wife and I go out to buy carpet for the house. I fill out the credit ap and then pull out my cell phone expecting a call as the store personel get approval for my credit.
A few minutes later, "Ok, you have been approved so we can schedule the installation".
What?? Where's my call from LL??
As it turns out the creditor has the option to call me, it's not manditory. So whatever credit or finance company the carpet place uses, they just decided not to call me.
I cancelled LL.

I'm not going to pay for something like LL, but I have a security freeze with all three credit bureaus.

Here is what I do.

Sign up for the Equifax Premier Plan;
It allows you to lock your credit file with them.
However the other two Bureaus (Transunion and Experian) don't provide this service. So instead you just use your Equifax account to place an autorenewing 90-day fraud alert on all three files. Just like Lifelock, you are supposed to get a call before any new credit is issued. The benefit of using Equifax is that credit WILL NOT be issued at that bureau, the other two...well hopefully you get a call!

Check it out, $20 a month. Includes unlimited access to your Equifax credit file.

Their commecials insult my intelligence, so they'll never get a dime from me. How do you lose your house from ID theft? Someone forces you to stop making payments? Even if they break into your bank account, you don't notice if after the first check bounces? It takes almost two yrs. to lose your house if you do it intentionally. How does ID theft make that happen?

You could say that of most things.

$240 a year? No way am I doing that!

No reason for an auto-renewing fraud alert when a simple freeze stays in place indefinately.

You know....you got me to thinking and it is alot, so I decided to go your route yesterday and found it easier than I thought to place a freeze, and the whole process cost me $6. Of course it'll be another $6 when I thaw or remove the freeze but it beats $240 a year. There are some other things bundled with the Equifax Premier Plan that I probably won't miss, but since I have never needed them I guess I probably don't need it.

The rest of the ops here, check out this link for an EASY link to credit freezing:
Clark Howard Credit Freeze Guide

Thanks for the reality check Dantilla!

Paying to prevent universal "economic slander" publicly-distributed by quasi-government institutional authority?

Pay, or else....

The world is upside down.

Too much credit score obsession. It's generated by the credit companies.
