Yankee stadium, question for the locals/regulars
My buddy is headed there this Thursday with 11 others to watch the Tigers lose to the Yankees and they could use a little help with the whattodos in the area. Their hotel is in midtown Manhattan so they'll be fine there, but they have a tour of the stadium scheduled for 10:00 A:M and the game doesn't start until 7:00 P.M. I have been told that the Bronx is nowhere to "hang out", so where should a big group of couples go to burn some hours before the game? These folks are all in their 30's if it matters.
Thanks guys.

Yankees suck.
Go SOX!!! ![]() Sorry for the hijack, but a true Sox fan looks for any opportunity to attack the Yankees. I've actually seen REAL Sox fans shouting disparaging comments against the Evil Empire at games where neither the Sox nor Yankees were playing. How many teams have fans like THAT?!?! ![]()

There is a subway station right at Yankee Stadium. If you are new to the city I recommend just taking the 15 min subway ride and getting back into Manhattan for the afternoon.

That's pretty much what I figured, but I don't know what other attractions might have been down there. Thanks,

There is nothing safe/fun to do in the Bronx except Yankee Stadium and the Bronx Zoo. The square mile around Yankee Stadium is actually the most dangerous in NY. As a matter of fact, the new Yankee Stadium, opening in 2009, is going to have a subway stop built into the stadium so nobody has any reason to wander outside.
I say, take the tour, get back on the subway and spend the day in Manhattan. It's only about a 15-min trip on the train.

BTW I find it extremely funny that the fattest guy on the Yankees is named "Jabba"
![]() Can't say anything bad about how they're playing right now, though... they are on fire.

It's baby fat
![]() BTW, I have tickets for them in Detroit next weekend. I haven't been to a game in 10 years and am really looking forward to going to one that matters. I would love to watch em play the sox and am keeping my eye out for tickets.

Good luck with Sox/Yanks tickets. You can probably find them if you're willing to shell out $200 per ticket.
Something tells me the stretch run is going to be interesting this year...

Yes, they're playing well now. Going to be a very interesting end run for the AL East Division.

OK -- Get to the stadium early (take the electric sewer) and go across the street to Stan's -- I've watched the first few innings of a lot of games from there.
Back in mid-town, he's got to go to Scruffy Duffy's. 8th Ave, between 46th and 47th -- or 47th and 48th. Believe it or not, I've been there more than 1000 times (literally) and still don't remember exactly which streets it's between. But it's on the west side of 8th ave. Great wings, great sports bar, and if Triona is still there, best looking Irish bartender in the City. There's "places all over the place" in mid-town, so give me his exact coordinates and what he wants to do (restaurants, ginmills, museums, etc.), and I'll give you more intel. JP

They are staying at the Belvedere just south of Central Park. It's six couples in their 30's and they will be looking to cut loose some(no kids). Maybe not Club 54 style, but beers and stupidity will be on the to do list. They will be there from Thursday till Sunday.

They could try Hogs&Heffers in the meat packing district, or any of the many hot spots down there.
In the Bronx, The Cloisters, The Zoo, or The Botanical Garden if they are in to such endeavors. although getting to The Cloister and the Zoo we have to be by taxi, which is an adventure in itself. I think the Botanical gardens rae walking distance fromt he stadium. MoMa is a must must do.

I love the botanical gardens, but I wouldn't recommend walking there from the stadium if you are from out of town.

Lendaddy -
OK, a few thoughts. If they want to do the Central Park Thing ... go to the Museum of Natural History. If the weather is nice, they should walk around the West Village for a few hours... lots of cool little boutiques/shops for all purposes. Broadway south of 20th or so is also a cool walk with lots of shops, etc. They could stop at McSorely's -- 15 East 7th Street (just East of 5th Ave). The oldest bar in New York. You can get beer in two flavors -- light or dark. Great place for an afternoon abeeritif. Dinner -- options galore (let me know if they have preferences), but top of my list, and a reason people still ask me where to go, is Volare. Which is on West 4th Street, just off of 6th Avenue. It's on the north side of 4th street, but it's subterranean, so you go downstairs to enter. IMHO better than all of Little Italy and at least as good as anything on Arthur Avenue. For a couple of cool "would never know they're there" places, try "decibel" -- it's another subterranean (see a pattern?) place -- a sake bar. On 9th Street, just west of 2nd avenue. it's on the south side of the street, and if you're not looking for it, you'll walk right by. It's like they took a piece of Tokyo and brought it to NYC. Large groups might have trouble sitting together; and expect a little wait. they don't open until 9? maybe 10. Veselka is across 2nd avenue, on 10th or 11th -- a great 24-hour Ukrainian diner. Get the borscht and the meat lover's plate. Chez es Saada is a fantastic place, on 2nd street, just east of 2nd Ave. It's on the north side of the street. It has a bistro-style cafe on the ground floor, and then an awesome restaurant .... wait for it ... underground. North African/Mid-eastern cuisine that is simply amazing. On friday/saturday they have belly dancers and music too. Just ask what they might be into, and if I can help, I will. I ate out 2 meals a day for 8 years in NYC, and was out boozing 6 nights a week. some of my intel might not be up-to-the-minute-current, but what I know is at your disposal. Best, JP
