Whole Food/Wild Oats Merger

To be blocked on anti-trust concerns?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070815/ap_on_bi_ge/whole_foods_wild_oats

While I can't argue with the reasoning here, why were the mergers of HP/Compaq, Exxon/Mobil, BP/Amoco, every company Microsoft ever bought, every bank merger in the past 15 years, SBC/AT&T not blocked as well?

Odds are the merger will not be blocked, but other grocery chains are worried about the competition Whole Foods brings to the marketplace and some are willing to use dirty politics (through the FTC) to try to limit Whole Foods' growth.

(Any arguments the FTC makes against any merger on "anti-trust" grounds is "bought and paid for" with political favors/donations.)

Some businesses cannot compete in a free marketplace so they try to use the political system to either give themselves a competitive advantage, or force their competition into a position of disadvantage.

Worried about competition? Unfortunately around here, the supermarkets don't seem very interested in competing at that end of the market at all.

What about the bit about Whole Foods using questionable negotiation practices to drive up prices for Wal Mart?

Whole Foods set "ground rules" barring suppliers from selling directly to Wal-Mart. "It wants Wal-Mart to have to go through distributors because that raises Wal-Mart's costs," the document said.
Many retailers will drop a vendor immediately if the vendor sells to Wal-Mart.
