Hey, I was there with my wife, her idea. She's 105 lbs, had twins last year and can eat whatever she wants. I think she's trying to kill me off...

I thought that being a distinguished (somewhat) older man, of wealth and fortune, driving a fine European automobile, proving to be appreciative of the finer things in life was supposed to make us attractive to these young, impressionable ladies.
That's the way it is in the movies. |
My preschool class got filmed saying the Pledge of Allegiance in all kinds of costumes. I was Yankee Doodle and we were on every night after Gunsmoke for about a month. Remember when you could still buy rifles at Western Auto?

Well, see? PPOT is good for something. I've never been in the fine City of Bell, CA....but at least I know its there now.

Huh...
I remember when amphometers (sp?) were introduced down here to catch the speedsters on the highways - that's when highways were single lane..those tapes the cops used lay across the road to record your speed. No radars or speed camera technology etc back then! They were the same days the coppers used downgrade a speeding ticket if they thought the conditions allowed it. I too remember B & W TV - having to change the dial manually and only 4 stations to choose from. I remember when the first 7 11 store opened in Melbourne and the first MacDonalds! Boy they were both big news! What about when shops only opened 9.00am til 5.30pm weekdays (no Friday night trade) and closed at noon on Saturdays? You couldn't buy ANYTHING on Good Friday...even the petrol stations were closed. I remember when "super" petrol went up to 64 cents an imperial gallon (bigger than US gallon - about 4.5 litres). We had a bowser at the workshop and I can remember the big fuss we all made when Dad turned the price over. Now we're paying 1.20 a litre for unleaded... Hell I remember Super petrol and Avgas! Up until a few years ago I used to be able to take a car onto the runway at the local airport and fill it up; or take containers and do the same - not any more :(. My class was the pilot group in year 7 to use scientific calculators at school . Once we were allowed to use ink at school if was strongly preferred if we used fountain pens not biros...don't miss this one as the bloody fountain pen cartridges had a habit of popping and leaking all over everything in my school bag . I remember when you would get detention for just answering back. My kids cannot believe this one! Lots more...but what I most miss is the trips we did when I was a kid - open roads, a lot less cars. We drove anywhere and everywhere; always at "brisk pace". Dad and Mum would pack a 356 or 911 for a weekend and we'd be gone interstate; just because we could :). Nowadays it's plain easier to take a plane...but nowhere near as much fun ;). |
