I remember when we had black and white TV and if I wanted to change the channel, I had to get up walk across the room turn the rotary knob and stand there and decide if I wanted to watch that, or one of the other two channels.

A wise friend told me he knew when he was getting old .

You forgot to mention adjusting the rabbit ears after you changed the channel to get a level of snow and static YOUR DAD you could live with!

I played Pong for 10 cents a game (it changedto 25 cents quickly though) while I was on my break at Sears paint department working for $1.90 an hour. I was doing good. Most of my buddies were working for $1.65 an hour, the minimum wage then (1971).

I had a "toy" that let you cast your own army men in a little set of aluminum molds from tubes of green goo. You'd burn the hell out of your fingers of course!...recall?...too dangerous for kids? Nah.... it took about one time to figure out you could cast them without arms or legs or heads to simulate wounded soldiers to scatter around your battlefield!

You forgot the matchbook behind the TV tuner dial to get rid of those vertical lines. Not a lot of program choices either as we only had 3 stations and one was educational.

My first few jobs were all at the local bowling alley. Made a $1.50 an hour washing dishes at 15. Pretty sure Pong started at a .25. Pinball was a dime(3 games for a quarter), the games were simple, mechanical, and so much more fun than current pinball. I was the pinball wizard! Bowling was 40 cents a game. Pool was free for employees so we played alot of nine ball and snooker.

Sears in those days (you remember, but the younger guys probably don't) had a candy counter and a little snack stand that sold popcorn. You could smell that popcorn all through the store, hell I can STILL smell it.

At Christmas of course NO ONE bought paint so they put can openers, coffee makers and popcorn poppers and such in our department to get some yield. No microwave popcorn then!
I would "work" - making popcorn and eating it for 4 hours a night after work and not sell a thing. In hindsight, it was so easy and so fun.

Downstairs in the stock room was an area where all the Craftsman tools that were returned (life time guarantee!) were piled up. As an employee you could pick anything out of the pile and get it for pennies. I bought some tools but NOTHING like I would if I had access to that today!

Ok guys... I will tell you about old. I had a 1950 Mercury two door coupe and used to fill it up with 19c a gallon of gas. Thought the price was way too much for a kid going to high school in the 1960's!

Still remember doing what Hugh and Terry mentioned about the TV... ahhhh the days of black and white...

Remember the TV test pattern? Broadcasting wouldn't start till 7 or so, would end at 11 and it would come on before and after. Some stations started their day with the Star Spangled Banner.

Apparently I'm younger than you Joe and yet I SOLD gas on the Sears gas island for 29 cents for regular when they were having a "gas war" - remember those?! Now that WAS cheap even for '72 but after the "war" we sold it for 39 cents for a long time. Those were the days.

I knew a guy in college that would have sold me his '68 Vette for pretty cheap because it had some fiberglass damage on the right front corner and the main reason I didn't buy it was gas was "all the way up to 55 cents" and I commuted to college about 30 miles one way.

More or less I grew up in the Ozarks and they always had gas wars there. Was most of the time the cheapest around.
