some reunion/guest appearances don't suck

One of the great songs of the 70's, and a kick ass rendition some 20 years later...

"I ain't blind and I don't like what I think I see..."

rouxroux 08-20-2007 04:55 PM

I liked THAT song, although I really did not care much for the "poppy direction" McD's music took the Doobies. (I guess I was just too much of a Tom Johnston fan). I've been impressed every time I've heard them. I miss the Simmons/Johnston/Baxter days.

Good stuff...

I remember being in Boulder in about 1980 and some friends were on their way to Red Rocks for the DB's "last concert ever"...

Rot 911 08-20-2007 06:06 PM

The Doobies were pretty much constant on my stereo from '70-'75 or so. I didn't like the turn they took when MacDonald came on board.

nostatic 08-20-2007 06:13 PM

in general I agree, but this song kills imho

And for another angle on McDonald, check this out about 7:15 into it (the whole video is great actually), but his stacked harmonies are amazing.

Love the Doobie Bros. Wonder what they sound like now.

My band has shared a bill with the Doobies a few times, and they're fan-freakin-tastic. Like for real and everything. Serious.

Seems to be alot of people think McD brought the Doobies downhill. I never really thought that. Always been a huge Mike McD fan. He plays this area a few times a year. Never miss a show.

Heres a funny goof on McDonald

Everytime I hear McDonald, I want to hurl. He killed the Doobies for me.

He's an incredible vocalist. Solo or with the Doobies I've always liked him. His background harmonies are amazing.

Here's a great live clip; "What a Fool Believes".

Don't get me wrong, I like McDonald's vocals, I just don't like the direction he took the Doobies in.

You are old! :D

Alot of the great bands took a wrong turn in the '80s. Look at what happened to "Chicago". Their music sucked horribly in the 80's.

azasadny 08-21-2007 07:15 AM

I met Jeff "Skunk" Baxter a few years back at a NAMM show (he played guitar with Spinal Tap) and he was a very nice person. Interesting guy!!

craigster59 08-21-2007 07:48 AM

I'm not a big McD fan, but I love the bass groove on "I Keep Forgetting"

madmmac 08-21-2007 09:49 AM

See Mike live, then pass judgment. Has a great range of styles of music that he can easily cover, soul, jazz....rock.

Saw him last year as the front for Steely Dan and he then joined them for some of their set. He was excellent...Steely was amazing.

nostatic 08-21-2007 10:16 AM

he elevates tripe to something listenable (having Gadd on drums doesn't hurt):

I saw the Steely Dan tour last year at Irvine. I think McDonald's set actually was better than SDs (and that is saying something coming from me). He sat in on a few songs, and the version of Show Biz Kids was just sick...the audio sucks, but you get the idea
