Scott,

I read this as the "co-workers" having the issues, not management; is that right?

If that is the case and the roster system applied by management is working then you don't have a problem, other than selfish co-workers. I suggest you maybe initially develop some selective deafness when it comes to these people and their selfish ideas. If the favoritism starts to show from management, that's a different story.

In years gone by we have employed people with issues (hell, EVERYBODY has issues). We have always drawn the line at favoring one employee for time off over another when their issues are not work related or dire. Yes, we will be supportive and cut slack when necessary - but if it affects our business, no way. The employees are there do to the job they signed on for - nothing more, nothing less. If they don't want to do that then we don't want them. Morale is important in a workplace as bad morale usually means a bad environment and less productivity (duh). There is nothing worse than having disgruntled staff because one or more abuse their position.

If this situation in your workplace is starting to cause bad morale then maybe it's time to have a chat with your favorite manager...

I'm a state employee, all state employees are represented by a union.
State HR is very different than corporate HR, for one thing they don't cut checks we have an accounting department for that.
Everyone in our building works weekends and holidays... except managers and supervisors (hmmmmmm)
For any state job there is a pay range, I hit the top of that pay range eight years ago.
No I wouldn't be working weekends all the time if I got the transfer.

Technically I like where I'm at, great people, great job... It's just that other than cost of living my paycheck has not increased in about eight years.

Diff in pay is $47.6K Vs $57.1K*

The point of this thread is the "baby on board" mentality i.e. "I have a child, you have no life"

*Note: To get the new position I need a EPA 608 certification that I tested for Saturday and I am waiting to be notified by mail if I passed the test.

Well if you get the transfer you have an opportunity to state your case right up - ie you have ageing parents, nieces and nephews...a life!

This BS argument about no kids; no life is just pure selfish and egocentric.

Good luck with the transfer and make sure your new co-workers understand right up front that you DO have family responsibilities...and a life.
