Richard Jewell passes on
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070829/ap_on_re_us/obit_jewell
Died young at age 44. This was the security guard who found the napsack at the 96 Atl Olympic Games, and then was falsely accused in a media-frenzy of being the actual bomber. They went through his trash, tore apart his life and picked the poor guy apart. Turns out it was a different guy who did the bombing and Jewell was just doing his job. It was a heinous and gutless collective act by most of the mainstream American "media". Sadly things have not gotten any better in the past 11 years. Hard not to feel sympathy for Richard Jewell. |

Poor SOB. It's a shame he wasn't able sue that paper into the stone age, there is no excuse for such shoddy journalism.

The police really f'ed that up....
When the towed his car away, he had a 96 ROCK (classic rock) sticker on the window. When he was cleared 96 Rock put billboards all over town that said "Freebird".

"The Atlanta Journal-Constitution never settled a lawsuit Jewell filed against it. Wood said Wednesday that the case is set for trial in January. "
Looks like he did get settlements from other media companies...

Richard Jewell v. NBC
Jewell sued NBC News for this statement, made by Tom Brokaw, "The speculation is that the FBI is close to making the case. They probably have enough to arrest him right now, probably enough to prosecute him, but you always want to have enough to convict him as well. There are still some holes in this case". Even though NBC stood by its story, the network agreed to pay Jewell $500,000. |

the story goes on to say that after taxes and legal fees, he got less
than 20% of the amounts...much of which he gave to his mother. Personally, if it were me...Id rather keep a good reputation, rather than gain maybe a few hundred thousand in exchange for being drug through the mud and convicted in the international court of media... hell, even today the Yahoo story headline identified him as "Olympic Bombing Suspect dies"... so he forever got that tag put on him. |

"Jewell got a job with a police force in Luthersville, Georgia, in November 1997. Luthersville is a small town some 50 miles south of Atlanta. In May 1998 he helped unblock the airway of a choking baby brought to the Luthersville Police Department by the infant's frantic parents."
