What is it with 996 owners?

Driving to work this morning in semi-slow traffic towards Toronto. Repeatedly pass and get passed by 2 996s within 4 cars of each other, and not even a glance. 911 drivers or 930 drivers always wave or nod, but not these guys........weird.

Just an observation.

That's cause it's a Porsh, not a Porsche.

I saw a movie this weekend "Cellular" in which a guy trying to save a kidnapped mother and son carjacks some a**hole lawyer's brand new 996 Porsh. Even though I don't condone carjacking, I had to root for this young guy. The lawyer was just too obnoxious.

Seriously, this kind of judgement and stereotyping isn't really fair. Those guys probably just like and use their cars like the majority of people out there, without any particular comraderie. Also, their windows were probably up and the AC was probably on in this heat.

Jepp, they tend to just give you that stiff upper lip look. Like if they are thinking - poor sod, driving that old pile of junk...

Just do a search for "why don't 996 drivers wave to me?", threads 1-266/1999-2005. We could publish an anthology and scholars could peruse it 50 years from now, writing dissertations on WTF a "996" was.

yup but I absolutely refuse to be jealous of the newer cars, I think they are actually jealous of everyone else. J/K

It is all these repeated waving/flashing topics that cause people to not see the humor in that 10 waving rules on a T-shirt thread.

Right Phil,

They are driving a dime a dozen cars,..... and they know it but would never show it !

On the Wave topic : I always wave the heartiest at the guys in the newer cars not to make them feel to bad about them selves

I actually flash my lights or wave @ every Porsche I see except maybe the Cayenne's (there are only 4 - 5 of those around here and the women driving them don't even have an idea what they are driving...just another grocery getter to them) not a real big population of 996's 997's or 993's but then again there is a small Porsche community down here in my neck of the woods, so most everyone is friendly back. more often than not I get flashed @ before I notice them....

I was at the Porsche / Audi dealer on Sunday looking at the Audi A3 and there were 997's and a few GT3's on the lot. I had my 83 SC parked about 20' away and out of about 12 customers looking at Porsches, only the service manager asked about MY car. The only thing the customers seemed concerned with was sticker price and the CGT parked in the showroom, could care less about my SC and another 356 coupe parked nearby.

Funny thing is, I used to have a '78 Corvette years ago, and every Corvette driver would flash headlights or wave regardless of how old or new their car was.

I really don't care if someone pays attention or not, but it's sort of puzzling.

My Dad tells a semi related but ture story...

He was out riding his 77' BMW R100RS in the city when a guy behind him in a brand new BMW car was flashing his lights and honking at him. Dad thought that there must be something wrong with the bike, so he pulled over to check it out. The guy in the BMW pulled over to and came up to talk to Dad.

The guy was so upset that my father had put thoes BMW badges on a Honda Goldwing. It took some time, and a level of self control, to explain to the guy that BMW makes motorcycles and had since the 1920's. He had to show the guy the BMW markings on the Speedometer and in the owners manual, before the guy would accept that his fine motor car had decended from dirty motor bikes.

The guy had a final question for dad. He asked "well are the bikes REAL EXPENSIVE?"

Some guys like to spend money on things to make them look powerful, sexy, or rich. Some guys like to spend thier money tearing down great engineering devices and figure out how to keep them working or make them work better. Some day this fourm will be full of guys tearing down 996 engines to make them better, but we will have to wait till Porsche makes the 1356 model.

I almost resigned from PCA because of an A-hole with this attitude. Thank God not all PCAers are like him. PCA Marque parking, historic races, the first year of the 996. Volunteer directing parking spots indicated that I should park next to a 996, perhaps the thinking it would be a good contrast, early and late together? As I was backing into the indicated spot, the 996 owner shouted, purposely loud enough for me to hear, "I don't want that old piece of ***** parked next to my new car." I just pulled forward, parked elsewhere. Obviously, this was a guy who thought he knew the price of everything. Uh, what does a first year 996 bring on ebay these days?

I agree. Why are so many people obsessed (and I do mean obsessed) with whether or not some person in a 911 waves to them? Who really gives a crap? If the person waves, that's fine, if they don't what's the big deal?

Just so you know, I've been out driving my Boxster plenty of times and had air-cooled 911 drivers pointedly ignore me. It definitely goes both ways.

Most 996 drivers in my area are too busy on the cell phone to notice ANY cars near them, let alone another Porsche. Sad. Really sad.

most of the time I would have to agree with you that 996 owner seems to disregards their ancestors. However afew weeks ago I parked next to a 996 Turbo and the owner said to me " what year is your car? this car is in perfect shape "

That my friends made me feel so GOOOD.

Everytime I waive at a boxster, the chick driving thinks I'm flirting.

In truth, if I waived at every boxster I pass in the bay area I'd never have time to shift. In El Ay it's even worse
