Its More Than Spoons
Don't look much at the Bay anymore...but yesterday I was bored and decided to take a look at what was up for sale in the Art Department
WHEN..the first thing staring me in the face was THIS!!! ![]() The listing said "American School Docks, Oil on Panel 20 X 27, signed with an unreadable signature." I stopped and said WOW! I know who that artist is!!! Its Rexford Brandt, Brandt was one of the MAJOR SO CA Water Colourists of the 2nd half of the 20th century. He was a prolific artist who is highly collected, however his works don't come up for auction very often. When they do its $2500 to 10K, While he was known as a Water Colourist, he did do Oils.... His buddy and fellow SO CA water colourist Phil Dike oils have recently come up for auction and have sold for 50K ++++. So I left a Bid...I thought I would have to fight it out with somebody! That didn't happen, so for $181.00 I bought a painting. If the painting doesn't pan out I still have a great decorator item..like I said before the Bay is a good place to find GREAT DECORATOR ART for a small price. BTW: If U look closely at the painting, it appears that the name "REX" appears on sign on the shack. Also the signature looks liked a mushed "Rex Brandt"To get this pic uploaded I had to scan and reduce the size of the file so the colour and detail is washed out in the pic.

Tabs,
I wrote a reply, reviewed it and decided it was too sharp, too ascerbic, too sarcastic so I deleted it. Good find, though, I guess.

Tabs, Are you familiar with Dorothy Sklar? She painted a lot of East L.A. scenes in 30's-50's. A friend of mine has a gallery and he purchased about 60 watercolors from her estate. When I get time I'll go see him and pick one up. Here's an example from Ebay (not my friends listing).

I have heard of Dorothy Sklar before. Am not familar with her work though. All the CA Moderne Water Colourists of the 30s on, have taken off in value in the past 6 or 7 years.
Depending upon the quality of the pieces your friend has, he is sitting on BANK!

Not a bad goal in life to have, but one which you will never achieve! Your statement about ambition is ambigious.

Yeah, but you'll never see one of my watercolors on Ebay.

Therein lies the basic question...To one man, a specific canvas is "art". To others it may be an abomination.

Here is something that I like, it is titled "Hillside Hotel 1961" It is the Cheateau Marmont in Hollywood. It was painted by Ron Blumberg. While his Gallery prices are through the roof, he doesn't have the auction records to support those prices on the open market.
Blumberg started painting in the Modernist style in NYC in the late 30s, during the 50s he moved to LA area and experimented with Abstract Expressionism. By the late 50s he settled into doing Expressionist CA Landscapes, done with the heavy use of the pallet knife. He passed away in 2002 or so. When I saw this I knew it was very good, but didn't buy it at the auction that day. An aquaintence did and later offered it to me for a coupla hundred over what he paid for it. ![]()

This little piece is unsigned. Whoever did this piece is a well known American Impressionist of the first quarter of the 20th century, and would be worth bank as such. The depiction is of the Bridge in Central Park in NYC. I bought this from a Dealer in Pasadena, CA who bought it at the estate auction of a MAJOR collector of American Impressionism. It was said the collector had paintings stacked from one Dining Room wall to the next.

Tabs, I may take issue with your grammar or view of world history, but I must say your taste is exquisite. I'm not much into spoons, but if you ever see some more art like that at auction and you don't want to bid on it for some reason, I would appreciate hearing about it. A thing of beauty is a joy forever.
