This proves Jimmy Carter is nuts...

That article "proves" nothing. It is a report of the former President's opinion about a prospective Presidential candidate.

If it proves something then your statements of political prefernce here "prove" ....what?

So true. He is at times a real idiot, especially when he goes overseas and opens his mouth...

Don't you mean any time he opens his mouth???? I bet he sent flowers to Castro wishing him a speedy recovery!!!

Ok, not meaning to hijack, but I really don't understand the American reaction to Castro. I mean, he is a dictator, he says a lot of crappy things, he does a few of them....but he is no worse than our friend in Venezuela - Hugo Chavez....

I mean, the American reaction is rabid and seems disproportionate....what gives?

Dennis

Well, he isn't very popular here in FL, and when he offerers support to those who want to do to this country, what he did to Cuba, plus, he has been a thorn much longer and there are still people who owned businesses in Cuba that he seized. Americans aren't too keen on having their property taken from them.

Tobra 08-30-2007 06:50 PM

Carter was a better President of the United States than he is an ex-president, and he was not that good a president either, he had some Middle East issues to go with that whole malaise thing.

RoninLB 08-30-2007 07:03 PM

Carter was elected as one who could offer so called "hope and promise" to a despondent population.

and Fla's anti-Castro political power is huge imo. So much so that it has influenced policies dealing with Cuba for generations.

I am still at a loss why we went to the ME and freed the Iraqi's and never bothered to free the Cubans 70 miles away who would have cheered and welcomed us.

Castro is a ruthless man. When I see the nostalgic threads on here about how wonderful Cuba is and to get around the embargo and go I want to puke. My good friend is Cuban and his older brother "thought" Castro was going to be good for Cuba and stayed when his family left in the early 80's in the boat lift.

My friend went back recently and the scene was just horrific. Yes, Cuba has amazing medical facilities...... for the rich. The poor get squat, barely a band aid. Free trade? Will land you in Jail. If you have a boat and can catch fish you are not aloud to barter with others, this will land you in Jail. No one can make something out of themselves there. You are poor and will stay that way, nothing you can do can change that.

His brother lived in a 12x30 shack, with no screens and no A/C, yes he had running water from a well and electricity but he could not afford to use it.

Go to Google Earth and look at Havanah, see how little cars are on the road compared to say Miami. You start to see the destitute of the country.

Its hell down there and he needs to go.

Tobra 08-30-2007 08:18 PM

I always have sort of wondered why the US let Castro sit there, not like there is any reluctance to meddle

nota 08-30-2007 08:44 PM

once appon a time there was a deal
post bay of pigs and the oct 62 near war
mr K removed the rockets and their nukes
and we agreed to leave castro alone

now with the USSR history
why we have not got him out of power in cuba
is a good question

I have many Cuban friends (in FL. who doesn't) and I don't know why we haven't (there is oil, cigars & American owned resorts) other than he hasn't threateden us and we do have a base there, something else I haven't figured out.

URY914 08-31-2007 03:21 AM

We could overthrow Castro with one Hummer if we wanted to. But after Iraq who wants to see us get into ti more "nation building".

Cuba will be empty a week after Fidel dies and Miami will look like Hong Kong.

GO DAWG GO 08-31-2007 05:15 AM

Tobra,

Its a political trade off. There obviously is a deal "Off the record" that Cuba stayed Commy and we kept certain people and items in Turkey or some other key strategic spot...Why else?

Bob

Can you imagine the potential when he dies? If they installed a democratic govt, and were able to re-establish trade with the USA, the country could change very quickly. Just the tourism industry would be huge for them, being that close to FL.

I agree that it has huge potential but for the the current population they will be on a boat to Miami/Tampa/Orlando/NYC ASAP. I can't blame them one bit.

widgeon13 08-31-2007 06:31 AM

Can you imagine, "Cuba" the 51st state.

probably not a bad idea.

sammyg2 08-31-2007 06:41 AM

Carter's vision of being "a champion for the poor" meant that he would make us all poor. I still remember his double-digit inflation, interest rates so high you couldn't borrow a dollar, Iran calling him out while he hid, his absolutely ridiculous statements abroad, he is truly a fool. Maybe not crazy, but foolish nonetheless. Senile might be a better description but it's been around too long to be senility.
He should be put in a home where he can't do any more damage.

Moneyguy1 08-31-2007 06:44 AM

Why do we blame one president for a poor economy (caused by basically outside forces) and give credit to another for a good economy? Seems quite silly and illogical.
