Hatin' on the Porsche

Just hours ago I was leaving the local Ingles grocery store with a ton of Mason jars to do my Okra pickling. I began unloading my stuff into the p-car and I heard my name called out several times. I looked up and saw two of my students coming toward me ( i work as a dropout prevention counselor at a high school). They came up and we began talking the normal "good to see you" stuff.

A few seconds later I heard "how does an E......High school counselor afford a Porsche?" "looks like they spend too much money on administration and not enough on the kids". I couldn't tell if she was joking or not so I kinda pretended she was. I responded that I got it on ebay for a deal. Keep in mind this is an 87 which is considerably cheaper than the majority of new SUVs in the faculty parking lot. Then the ***** busts out with " you are teaching the kids that all they need is a crotch rocket but they don't need to know how to read" There was no joking on her face. She then turned around and walked off.

My kids were like WTF? I was like WTF.

Any similar experiences/ways to deal with it?

She is a self-righteous self-important person who is further endowed with both apalling manners and absolute stupidity.

Allow her to fin her way back to the shallow end of the gene pool. The moment serves the useful purpose of demonstrating to your children that you have grace - something she will never be accused of possessing.

You did handle it with grace - more than I'd have been able to muster for sure.

When people give me grief about mine, I usually look them dead in the eye and make a statement about it being my just reward to myself for many long hours of hard work and personal sacrifice - and that ANYONE (the implication being them) could do likewise if they wanted to, but typically choose the path of laziness and consequently, Porsche-less-ness.

This "lady" (and I use that term loosely) is an idiot. Make sure you buff up your car nice and shiny this weekend - just for her.

My standard reply to the 'porsche envy' is: "You can have any car you want, you just have to be prepared to pay for it!".

Never ceases to amaze me how people see me in my $4,000 Porsche and I get the "I guess you think you are all that and a bag of chips" attitude...

But if I driving my $12,000 Hyundai I'm driving a responsable economy car.

Seriously you should have flat out told the kid how much you paid for the car (not that it's any of her damn business) compared to cost of the average new Honda, Toyota, Ford, Chevy, etc. she sees in the teachers parking lot (or her friends are tooling around in).

Also should note that high school is usually the age when many of us get the "high and mighty knowitall" attitude... fortunately some of us grow out of it.

PS: There is a pickling okra joke in here somewhere but I will be nice… for now.

My students usually just say "Hey Mr. B., nice car!"

I've had teachers wonder how I can afford it, but by the time I break down what I"m paying for both of my cars versus their new Honda Civic, they stop talking.

... tickling Oprah? Whaaaa?

It's obvious why this ignorant student is in a drop prevention class. Her brain dropped out long ago.

Tell her the new math figures this way: 1 SUV = 3 1980's 911's.

Send a message via AIM to Gogar
When I'm at home, i work at a big TV-church (4,000 seats 3 times a day on Sunday.) I do the audio mix that plays with the TV-portion of the show. So I sit in the room with all the TVs on the wall and the guy screaming into a headset and I try to make an audio mix of the 50+ microphones on the stage and the guy talking and people clapping etc.

One time before work I was getting out of my $15k '83 SC before work and the Video Director pulled up next to me in his 2007 4-runner. He jumped out and said, "Damn, must be nice. Maybe I should ask for a raise. The audio guys are taking all the money!"

Anyway, I tried to tell him how he could have 3 SC's or his 4runner he didn't believe me. But then I figured why waste my time. He'd freak if he knew I have 2 911s!!!!!!!

Sometimes,for fun, I just tell people it's a Bug.

Generally, when a statement hurts the recipients feelings, it has elicited some (at least subconsious) sense of guilt or shame.

In this case the girl is clearly formally giving you a complete message of crap that realistically should be easy to just laugh off. But obviously you could not.

Hence, with the typically well evolved capacity of teenagers, she managed to hit a 'nerve'. As your reaction in this case is based primarily on a subconscious compilation of reasons, you feel hurt and mal treated but you can not understand why you should (she is just an imbecile kid, who cares right).

You have been a target for the paradoxical situation where you formally have done nothing at all that should render such aggrevation on her part - yet your subconscious can´t but to feel she in some perverted way has a point. That is why you are upset enough to post the event.

Now if this post is not qualified, nonsense, ranting - I don´t know what is!

It's kinda the same thing about an 'older' person buying any sports car. I have ALWAYS been a car guy. Grew up in the midwest in the muscle car era, (great cars). I as a kid couldn't afford one even though most of my friends had awesome cars. My car in HS was a 65' Fairlane with '3 on the tree'. And yes I'm bitter, LOLOLOL.
So now I am successful, (a realative term), and can afford a toy I'm having a midlife crisis!!!!!!!!!!! We just can't win. But as Sigmund Freud just told us above, who cares!

THe woman was in her early fifties/late forties, not a kid by any stretch. Just a sour old hag in my book.

Some RUSH lyrics come to mind:

A Farewell to Kings

When they turn the pages of history
When these days have passed long ago
Will they read of us with sadness
For the seeds that we let grow
We turned our gaze
From the castles in the distance
Eyes cast down
On the path of least resistance

Cities full of hatred
Fear and lies
Withered hearts
And cruel, tormented eyes
Scheming demons
Dressed in kingly guise
Beating down the multitude
And scoffing at the wise

The hypocrites are slandering
The sacred halls of Truth
Ancient nobles showering
Their bitterness on youth
Can't we find
The minds that made us strong
Can't we learn
To feel what's right and wrong

Can't we raise our eyes
And make a start
Can't we find the minds
To lead us closer to the Heart

(...ahem)

...........I'm in the Nixon mode today,..."F### the doomed:

many thanks for attempting to preserve our youth's educational well being....'tis not easy....a noble thing to do.

My Best

perhaps you should teach them the "shooting oneself in the foot" saying
eg, "diss the teacher, expect to be graded with extreme prejudice..."

yah. Happens to me all the time. She learned long ago how to push your (and similar middle-class-working-Americans-with-a-cosmopolitan-conscience) buttons. BTW, any chance your a Californian/Washingtonian with a 60's influence?
Find out what her brothers drive -- cousins, uncles, aunts, etc. The second you find that one of her relatives is driving "out of their class," you have busted her. She obviously can't even influence her own kin.

Doesn't happen all the time, the haters.

I was in redneckville putting the finishing touches on a 350 for install into a friends Suburban today. While there, the landlord came out. She's late 20's, good figure, great personality, loaded, and attached, damn. After having a beer and a few smokes she proceeded to tell me all about her new vette, and an accident recently. I thought not to much of it, the usual, hot blond vette thing, you know. Then she asks me if I wanted to sell my Porsche. I tell her no. Then she asks what year it was, said it's nice, I like it, on and on. She was serious, apparently she has a thing for old cars. About this point I'm about hard as a rock. I told her on one condition would I entertain the thought of selling it, as I motioned her over to the corner of the garage.

Immediately her top flies of, and my shorts were at my ankles. I couldn't whip that somebeotch out any faster. I'll leave you to fill in the rest. You might as well fill in your own story starting at her liking old cars.

Nice gal, good taste. I did have to tell her what she really wants is a 951 though.
