Nearly 200mph...
Yesterday, 7am Germany.
Autobhan outside Aachen.... in the Ford GT ![]() I am already off boost... but we never hit the magic 200mph number.... probably we got as high as 197... The autobanh was only 2 lanes and even if it was Sunday early in the morning there was the odd car out.... So as soon as I saw cars at the horizon I would lift. How did it feel? Was the car really stable at that speed?
It must be cool to stretch the legs and not worry about getting pulled over.

The car was insane... It was still pulling hard... but since it was a 2-lane stretch of the Autobhan I would lift upon seeing another vehicle.
At 200mph u do 1 mile every 17 seconds so you really need to look ahead. The car was incredibly stable. We (I was with a friend) hit 180-190 several times, with turns (long radius highway turns) at 170mph. I was extremely impressed as I thought I would feel the car become light above 160... and I was a bit nervous at pushing... But the car was very confidence inspiring. It's incredible how fast you slow down when you lift off the throttle... it's like when u hit the brakes at a lower speed.... I was in 5th at 6,000.... the car has another 500 rpms and then 6th gear.... |

Brings back some very nice memories. Drove the 'bahn for just over 10 years in a 911 and its hard to beat.
Be careful of patches of fog this time of year, especially late at night and early morning. Also critters crossing the road.

That's cool.
A few days ago I was doing 100 mph with two passengers in my 30 year old 911 following a Ferrari F40.............that was a little crazy. I'll post pictures in a couple of days of the Diablo and the Vector I was also trailing - what a ****** great day it was. ![]()

That's awesome. Just out of curiousity, what's the stock top-end on one of those GTs?
I'd be worried about a tire coming apart or something. At that speed, your day could get bad real quick.

I know that stretch of highway. IIRC, there are speed limits on parts of it. I think the straightest part is by those nuclear plant cooling towers, about halfway betweeen Koeln and Aachen. If you were headed westbound, there are definitiely speed limits as you approach Koeln and that city is the speed camera capital of Germany.

Holly Cow !!
I have no reference for mph - but if 197 mph equals 317 kph it is insanely fast! I have been passenger in a 959 in 1988 doing 160 mph on the strait parts of a narrow country road and I honestly was not bone dry in my pants afterwords. How does the engine sound at that rev and speed ? Must be intoxicating!

That's crazy fast! What a ride that must have been.
It's amazing that a street car is aerodynamically safe at that kind of speed. I'd be worried most about hitting a minor bump or rise in the road and being turned into a rocket! |

Markus 197mph is indeed 317 km/h....
The Autobahn in question is the 46. It runs parallel to the 44 (Aachen - Dusseldorf). It was a 2 lane stretch and it was pretty deserted. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=geilenkirchen&sll=51.056071,6.04248&sspn=0.402249,0.925598&ie=UTF8&ll=50.983505,6.122131&spn=0.20144,0.462799&z=11&iwloc=addr&om=1 The car generates 300lbs of downforce at 130mph. At 200mph it was glued to the road. It feld so much different from a 911.... When we were planning the 200mph chase over dinner the night before I was a little nervous... It's kinda silly... But then the next morning I gradually built it up from 160 to 180 and the car felt incredibly solid.... From 180 to 200 it was quick. Again I was in 5th with 500 rpms to spare and another gear... Stock (my car is completely stock) the car has been tested at 212mph on the 8mile oval in Nardo' (Italy). In all honesty I didn't pay attention to the engine noise or anything for that matter. I didn't even know how fast we were going until my friend told me. My arm muscles were aching and my mouth was completely dry after those 8 mins at 180mph... I do not think I will do it again.... one because you need a friend totell you how fast you are going, two because you need an empty stretch of Autobahn, three because it is really a bit silly... Still it is one of those things you just hear about and read in the magazines... ... and I nearly got there... The fact that we did "only" 197 makes it even more real.... |

As I understand, one of the few inherently less perfect traits of the 911 is the feeling of wandering lightness in the front at high speed. Apparently it is still noticeable on the latest models. Not that I would know from personal experience..
Must be annoying for the Porsche engineers. Many less expensive and race focused family cars feels more planted at higher speeds. Well, if you have to have a 250 kg piece of metal hanging out behind the rear wheels....and personally I wouldn´t have any other way. ![]()

This is such a pleasant difference from the 'other" board. There this thread would have fifty comments from purist buffoons talking about how inferior American cars are.
Ford GT has to be one of the best sports cars ever.
