what magazines do you read/subscribe to?
While I'm a digital worker bee, my heart is in analog and I'm subscribing to some "real" magazines to read to try and keep up (beyond news.google.com). First on the list are The Economist and The New Yorker. A friend also highly recommends Foreign Affairs.
What comes in your mailbox (hopefully not the postman)? |

i get a few. sportsafield, Saveur, Cooks, Bugle (rocky mountian elk foundation rag). just sub'd to Grassroots. |
I get the Economist, Autoweek, AOPA Pilot
|
I don't subscribe to any, too many ads, too little "meat" for me...
|
and sorry, but the bbs bug put this in tech instead of OT where I intended...
|
to me the best read is the Wall Street Journal.
On the car side all I really need is Car & Driver. I really like Car&Driver. I get Panorama through PCA but flip and toss it in less than 10 minutes. I do the same with my regional PCA newsletter. It's not that they're not good, I just don't take the time to read them. I had Excellence for a while but I couldn't act on 10% of the cool things I read about. I liken it to someone who makes an average US salary subscribing to millionare magazine (if there is such a thing). For a while I enjoyed This Old House but it became a frustrating exercise since my project list kept getting longer, not shorter so I stopped that one. |
and my motor drop thread gets moved to regional because i mention BAP......
its who you know around here i guess...... i get jugs monthly by the by.. T$ |
My reading bill is a little high:
diesel power 8-lug grassroots moto Four wheeler bimmer Wooden boat Good ole boats CFO Fraud magazine WSJ also |
Excellence
Zymurgy lots of others get delivered, but I don't read them. |
None. I'd rather be doing things than sit and read. Heck, I only put aside a few minutes a day to read this site, unless I can't sleep.

I got piles of good books stacking up around my house so I stopped getting magazines.
I did enjoy Excellence, and a couple of audio magazines for a while, I think I am still getting table talk. |
Fine Homebuilding, Old House Journal, Acoustic Guitar, Double Gun Journal, Chronicle de Couloir.
|
MILF
BBW Illustrated Over 40 Dog Fighting Journal |
I normally stop at the library every other week and pick up a few months of what I'm interested at the time. Stay regular on Car & Driver, Flying, Kiplingers. My wife got me a subscription to Cycle when no one 'adopted' it for the library. The AMA mag and numerous trade journals come to the shop but about the only way I can read them is to take them home.

Autoweek
Road&Track Excellence Roundell (BMWCCA) Panorama (PCA) Playboy Popular Science Gourmet Cuisine at Home Fine Woodworking Newsweek Time Texas Monthly This Old House Family Handyman National Geographic Mens & Womens Health National Geographic Traveler Popular Mechanics (and probably some I'm missing) My wife works at a library so she gets really good professional rates. We also change them up a little every year. My wife was interviewing for a new librarian a while back with some of her coworkers. After the interview they asked if he had any question for them. He said he wanted to know what magazines they took. When my wife mentioned Playboy, she said he looked pleased :D. |
Excellence - love it
Pano - basically automotive Playboy - look at the pictures, skip the articles Local PCA chapter magazine - VERY well done, always a great read, and often pics of my car! Macleans - Canadian version of Time The Walrus - sort of a Canadian New Yorker, but a bit more literary My wife's grandmother, bless her heart, keeps giving us gift subscriptions to Reader's Digest. |
Wired
2600 All I have time for. |
Excellence and Sport Aviation

Those three - plus Octane (the single best classic car magazine), Cooks Illustrated and Vanity Fair. |
New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Economist, that's about it. Oh, Cooks Illustrated too. Excellence sometimes. Sometimes a French news magazine when I find an international magazine place.
I subscribed to Foreign Affairs for awhile, decided it wasn't worth it - very interesting, articulate, persuasive articles by people who often turn out to be just flat wrong - like Max Boot who spent 2003 and 2004 writing about what a tremendous success the Iraq War had been. The articles do make you think, that's good, but not worth the expense and time to me. It's available in the library anyway. If I had more time, some magazines I like reading and would subscribe to: Car, Wooden Boat, Guns & Ammo, Rider (is it still around?), Fine Homebuilding. |
Car & Driver
Flying Plane & Pilot All I have time for these days. Those I miss: Fine Homebuilding, Fine Woodworking, Excellence, all the other car magazines I used to get. |
Excellence
Automobile Panorama Potpourri (local PCA rag) American Rifleman |
My short list:
Grassroots Motorsports Road & Track Excellence Pano Porscheforus (My PCA region's magazine) On occasion, I will pick up at the local Barnes & Noble the following: Automobile The Economist Consumer Reports (Though I hate the fact that they are so blatantly biased...) Any other car magazine that has Porsche content... -Z |
Wired
Cigar Aff... Time Pano Air and Space AOPA Business and Commercial aviation Aviation week Jag World 911 & Porsche World Flying & more I do not remember... I do not pay for 99% of these, instead trading frequent flier miles for free subs. Take them out on the road with me, read them and leave them for others to read. Otherwise when at home I donate them to the barber shop I use. |
Harpers
Hot Rod Trail Runner UltraRunning |
My dad has a ton of frequent flier miles so we get a bunch:
Motor Trend Car and Driver Road and Track ESPN In Shape Teen Vouge The Economist Forbes Maxim Trailer Boats Motorboating |
Science
Scientific American Discover Popular Science Popular Mechanics Reliable Plant Pumps & Systems Chemical Processing Engineering & Mining Journal Chem.Info Plant Services Plant Engineering Assembly Uptime InTech Automotive Design and Production I now rip out articles, highlight the important info and write a brief on the topic with the reference. Otherwise the stack gets stupid big each month! |
Octane
This Old House Fine Woodworking (a gift from a friend who thinks I'm better than I am, should have "Rough Woodworking") The Atlantic |
Car & Driver
Pano (really only look at the tech and cars / parts for sale) Parenting (wifes) Cooking something or other (wifes as well) Consumer Reports For those of you that say you don't read, what do you do when you taking the kids to the pool, or making a deposit in the round bank? That's about the only time I read magazines, or on planes. Bill |
Excellence (best magazine i have EVER subscribed to)
Car & Driver (for some non p-car content) NRA freebie mag (typical gun rag nonsense) Panorama (possibly the worst magazine i have EVER had a subscription to; do look at classifieds though) Hoping to add a few this Christmas including Octane (based on comments here), Vintage Motorsports, 911 & Porsche World. Also get the local PCA newsletter which is good for event calendars. i absolutely require a fair amount of old fashioned book/magazine reading weekly to stay sane. it's good to get away for a few minutes in the library (throne room). |
New Yorker
Mainsheet (Catalina sailboat owners) This Old House Excellence Texas Monthly AARP :D |
Maximum PC
Wired Cigar aficionado Wife reads a bunch of magazines...I just look at the pictures :D Helmethead |
Grassroots Motorsports
Autoweek Excellence I also read a co-workers Automobile, Car & Driver and Road & Track. I take my rags to work, and he does the same. My wife gets Parenting and Paula Dean's magazine. We also get Better Homes and Gardens, but neither of us subscribed to it... From the suggestions here, I think I'll check out Octane. |
[QUOTE=nostatic;3465281A friend also highly recommends Foreign Affairs.
[/QUOTE] Over time, the cost of flying to Europe and back will put you in financial trouble...not to mention the expense of the Mistress herself. |
The Economist

Maxim
