Will this happen to 911's as they age? (air cooled vw related)

I have noticed a trend where air cooled vw guys are going for the "patina" look. I have heard some call it the "rat" look. An example:"

I kind of like it in a way...

The "Rat Rod" fad started with old T-Buckets, coupes, sedans, trucks, etc. as a backlash to the pristine, trailered, eat-off-the-frame, "show car" quality street rod crowd.

I personally like it for a change, may build one myself.

Certainly a few (probably younger) Porsche owners will play with that theme,
if for no other reason than; IS THAT A PORSCHE!!??? Shock value.

There are always those on the fringes that push against the "norm".

How's this for "rat":

http://jalopnik.com/cars/porsche/the-meanest+looking-356-on-the-planet-296706.php

A little extreme for me.

However, about 6 months ago there was a beautiful "survivor" speedster on ebay. Complete running & unrestored car with aged but original paint, cracked leather, etc...
I'd take one like that over a restored car any day of the week.

There was one mean looking 911 with a perfect body and satin black paint job on the FS board a little while ago that I wouldn't mind being seen driving around.

There is also a red primered 911 running around my town that looks nice.

For those of us that are not the wash and wax weekly crowd it is not a bad idea.

I meant to mention; the 'patina' effect is now being PAINTED on some cars by professional shops to imitate the actual rust, faded/loss of paint, etc.

So (predictable) the circle completes itself.

Years ago, I had a 49 Ford F1 pickup that was in primer, small block chevy, otherwise stock. That was before the "old truck" guys got into it and made them cool. I wish I had it back. It was loud, rode hard, and solid. Man, that truck could be cool today.I know where its at, in pieces, waiting for me to come and get it. Should I?

I think the cars will eventually move into one of two groups, much like the distribution of wealth(think dissolving middle class). Some will move into the concours and collector's group and be mostly perfect in appearance. The rest will be modified to be fun drivers and some may even end life as parts cars.

Mine will be one of the fun drivers that will never be mistaken for a show car.

+Eleventy billion.

I've been contemplating selling my 2000 Silverado for an old truck or El Camino. I want something with some character.
