Townhome, any rentals, can suck! Long.

I have lived in a two story townhome for the last 8 years. All in all, it has not been that bad, but both managers really have no clue. The first one, did not think that when the AC failed during 100° summer weather and would take a week to get the HVAC company out. Second has not been as bad, but she is trying to make people play by her rules. This one needs to learn to give 24 hour notice before entering our places!! There's more, but I'd be ready to start a fight by the time I was done.

Anyway, our units have been scheduled to have our pipes replaced. This is a really good thing, 'cause there is every known metal in these walls and rust prevails. The schedule date came and went and nothing happened. I finally asked the company that was doing the work what was happening. "Oh, we needed to send you the notice via US mail, not tape it to your door".

"OK, when are you going to finally start?"
"Should be in about two weeks."
"Great!"

Two weeks go by and nothing. Finally see the guy and we chat again. He gives me the info that was supposed to be mailed. "Yeah, we'll been in your unit October 22-26."
"Oh great, I'm leaving the country on the 26th, that's not going to work."
"OK, we'll work around that."
"That would be nice, thank you."

Notice on door late afternoon, yesterday - We need to enter your unit tomorrow and Friday. Oh great! I'm not ready for this, but hey, they're not supposed to actually repipe until Oct.

9:00 am, this morning - I had already been up since 6:45, so I could move my car onto the street. Knock, knock - "we need access to your unit."
"How long are you going to be?"
"All day and tomorrow"
"What?!? This isn't supposed to happen until late Oct...."

Anyway.....

Here's my place today...

Looking from the living room, into the kitchen.

Halfway up the stairs.

Rest of carnage at stairs.

Even more, extending to the right.

This is looking into one of the 2nd story hall closets.

I finally leave to go to a clients. We put together a $6000.- order through Dell and I decide to change an email addy on the order and.... Friggen browser hangs, order lost. I spent an hour going through the order.

Only two more weeks of open walls to go. Oh, they are covering the gaping holes with brown butcher paper for now.

Galvanized pipe...that sucks. Better to do it now rather than going on vacation and getting a telephone call and then wishing you had done it sooner.

Yes, galvanized and copper... Mixed together... I have no problem with living amongst the mess, but, it's the fact that I rent and have no control over this and I get paper work saying work will begin a month from now, but....

The wheel is turning, soon the water will be clear, but it seems that the owner may be able to raise my rent by 10% (5x5) over the next two years. I'd rather they finish in the next few weeks.

My head hurts.

I'm over it. I just keep wondering... If I walk into the brown portal, will I enter a new dimension

The pipework sucks for you, but it could be much worse.

No A/C for a week is totally unacceptable.

I had the polybutalene pipes that were time bombs. The first leak I caught when I was at home and it was small. Unfortunately, my realtor and home inspector were in cahoots and never pointed this problem out to me when I bought in '96. After the first leak, I started my research and learned that I had just missed the class action deadline. Insurance wouldn't pay for the new pipes either. Next leak was a burst in the middle of the night while I was on a flight back from Europe. Roommate didn't see it until he got up and walked into the pond/living room on his way to work. Insur. paid a lot for that repair, but still wouldn't pay for the new pipes.

When they came to replace my pipes, I left them a key. When I came home from work, there was no sign at all that they had been there other than the new drywall. They painted it the following day and did a perfect job of cleaning it all up. $4400.
