This is one of those cases that bug me, in the Uk there are numerous cases of paedophiles, muggers, burglars etc who seem to get away with suspended sentences (and lets face it these people really don't give a flying **** about the well being of there fellow citizens) yet this guy breaks the speed limit and ends up in the slammer.

To be fair I have no idea if the road, the conditions or the level of traffic at the time was suitable for that kind of speed but I know for a fact that there are stretches of road in the UK were under the right conditions high speeds are easily and safely attainable.

Ultimately nobody was injured or killed. Other people have actually been convicted of the incredibly serious charge of "Death by dangerous driving" and got away with a lighter sentence.

It was driving a Porsche that did him in. The Volvo driving policeman and prosecutor just couldn´t have that.

That bit of road is not really suitable for that speed....suitable for more than 70mph, absolutely, but 100mph more...no.

So whilst he deserves punishment....the quantum does appear disproportionate in view of others' crimes....but mainly it is a deterent...it deters us from doing speeds which although not as high are still very illegal.

And sadly Livi it was merely the fact he was not a Police Officer that got him in jail...we can recall the unmarked Police Vauxhall being 'tested' by its asigned driver on a single lane (each way) road at night at a speed of 159mph (or so).

The driver, a trained police driver was not even disciplined by his force for such an amazing lapse of judgement....

On what road? Each time I'm back in Peoria I prepare myself to get caught on the freshly redone 74. Could only imagine the trouble I'd get in with a 996.

eeh, he got jail sentence because he drove 172 AND it wasn't his car AND he took it without permission

not 100% sure he would have gotten the jail sentence if he had just done 172 with nothing else

Nope,

He'd have gone to jail even if it was his car..

The previous 'winner' in this category was driving his own M3...
