White smoke from a VW Type 4??

Hey guys, I thought the PPOT Brain Trust could help out with this. My buddy Drew has a 1700cc Type 4 with hydraulic lifters and dual Dellortos carbs. Says he is seeing white smoke coming from the emulsifier tube and the barrels of the carbs, and is wondering what the heck it could be. A quick and dirty google search didn't turn up anything that seemed useful. He says it's not a lot, barely noticeable when driving, but it's a pretty new engine, so he's concerned.

Any ideas?

Don't know what an emulsifier tube is, or why you'd get white "smoke" out of the barrels of the carbs, but if the carbs are water jacketed, to warm the air/fuel mixture, then a leaking intake manifold with water seeping in comes to my mind.

Hugh, thanks for the reply. I'm told the carbs aren't water-jacketed.

Also, it only happens on 1-2 and not 3-4.

Head gasket between 1&2, check for emulsion in the oil, and water in the coolant. On an old car I once had, I had something similar and I put an air hose on a hose end that would screw into the sparklplug hole, applied air and got bubbles out of the radiator

Might be a stuck float, and/or running rich enough that gas is vaporising out of the intake/carb.

Air cooled engine in VW Type 4 - Same as Porsche 914.

Only thing I can think of is same as Thom's suggestion. I've seen it on my lawnmower...

Might want to post it to the 914 board, same exact engine. More concentrated knowledge.

Sounds like you have some blowback pressurizing the carbs. Could be from too much ign advance, gummed valves not sealing well, improperly adjusted valve lash, etc...
