Violin for daughter?

My daughter needs a violin for her strings class at school, 1/2 size. I'd like to stay under $250. Does anyone have experience with these, can give me some pointers?

Thanks,

!

my daughter had a violin and just quit playing. Let me ask her later today where it is and how much it would be.

Maybe we can do something. I'll get back to you later.

I bought one off of eBay for $17. We just use it for decor, but it plays ok.

I saw the $20 and under samples on ebay, just can't trust that yet. Looking at a couple used ones though.

If nothing else, they make really fancy firewood. Imagine having your friends over for cocktails this winter and warming your parlor with a stack of violins. Now that's upscale luxury.

$80 Suzuki student violin is fine for elementary school music. Believe me, for your 4th grader, it's just a bunch of screeching, not matter how much you spend.

That's what many school districts use, and rent to students for $20/month.

(This particular one has crazy shipping charges, but you get the idea).

The real cheap combo kits on Ebay are truly junk. They are made of cheap wood (the "ebony" parts, even if they say ebony are just crap wood stained black. They are usually glued with the wrong glue which makes repairs impossible and they come with junk strings and fittings. The corners are not blocked, they will go out of tune rapidly etc etc.

On the other hand, it would be stupid to pay any serious money for a small child to initially learn on. Either rent (probably best) until the child grows into a full size one or buy a $150-$400 cheap student model and hope the kid does not break it or tire of it.

Little kids when first learning, will make all kinds of awful sounds with it for quite some time (whether it cost $50 or $50,000), but just in case they might enjoy it and possibly stick with it, I am guessing most folks will at least want to buy or rent something that will stay "somewhat" in tune for more than 5 minutes and won't fall apart after three lessons.

Agree with all of it - except renting costs around $200, and from I can tell, for that money, you are basically renting a $100-$150 violin! (Suzuki student model).

P.S. I remember the violin thread, if my kids ever really got into violins (doubtful!), I'd love to get them a Hancock original!

Actually, yes, tried that. Wrong time of year, all WTB ads.

Found one that wasn't too high at the place recommended by my daughters strings teacher, plus I can trade up when she out grows it, if she stays with it.

Bonus is the ex gets to hear cats caught in a dryer

Thanks guys.

John, I might add that for a student instrument you might want to check the ones suggested by the MENC (Music Educators National Conference) String Panel. Nothing can turn a kid off (especially in the beginning stages) than having an inferior constructed instrument. The rental/purchase plans that many music shops are great (most have the option of trade-up and sometimes "repair insurance"), plus, if the student decides "it's just not my thing", you can always bail. I know for my double bass students, the Engelhardts have been a good tough (and somewhat musical) beginning instrument. But then, they only make basses and cellos.

I think you could make a nice income buying the cheap ones from Ebay and selling them at the beginning of the school year. My wife wanted to try the cello. We owned the Ebay cello for 8 months and made a $10 profit when we sold it on craigslist... and that includes what we paid for shipping. They're now significantly cheaper than what we paid. I heard her cello instructor play it and the sound remarkably nice.

Get her an Electric Violin. And some headphones. So when she's practicing, you don't have to hear it.

Electric violin sounds simply awesome in the right hands.
