Maybe relocating to the napa valley
So a company in the napa valley is considering me for employment. It could get me a salary around $120K. So how far would that kind of salary go in the area? I could likely pocket $150K from the sale of my house here in jersey as a down payment there but I understand the cost of housing and living there is way high.
Any opinions from the west coast are most welcome. TIA

Napa Valley was expensive when I left CA 7 yrs. ago. I can't imagine what it is like now. Check out www.realtor.com

Napa is one of the most beautiful places in the US. I live in Petaluma which is a 20 minute drive away and hang out in Napa all the time. There is a reason it costs more to live around here...its worth it!
You can make it work for $120K and if you want a little more still be within a 30 to 40 minute drive. We are the Redwood region of the PCA and we call ourselves the Red Wine region. We have a very active club with lots of events. How many other PCA regions have several winery runs a year and get exclusive tours at some wineries.

It would get you a couple of very nice dinners at The French Laundry - provided you don't go crazy with the wine list.

150k will not get you a shed in Napa Valley, not even talking about the house..
The area is beautiful, but pretty far from everything if you are still young and want to hang out once in a while. Where in NJ are you?

WOW! A "whinery" tour! How special can you get? My PCA membership ended at 39 years. Cindy & I being thoroughly snubbed on a "whinery tour" was our last PCA "event". Hwy 99 of Orygun has a winery every few miles. Petaluma? Is there still a Jesse Lane there? Named after my maternal grandmother, Jesse O'rourke. Man, am I ever glad mom & dad decided to leave Californicate when I was 4.... All that said? Russian River country is gorgeous...

Geez, Flatty, I'd jump all over that! You could find something within reason within a reasonable distance. You'd be in heaven out there, and we could hang out more...

Somehow I think I could get by in napa valley on $120k/yr if someone bought out my present position.
Is the sinking porch fixed? Jim

Think about it...You'll get to meet me!!
Seriously, with that salary, you'll do just fine. And...Sears is just 20 minutes away. Also, I have an estate house for sale for $415k that would be a nice starting point. Very likely if you made a "reasonable" offer it would be a "done deal". Come take a look. I've been here for almost 20 years. It's awesome here. I have no intentions of ever leaving. KT

Will give you a hint. Good friend of mine is a flight attendent and she flys for a company based in Napa. She lives in Phoenix and commutes WEEKLY by SWA because she simply cannot afford to live in the Napa area.

Yes you can live in napa on $120k. Your $150k will be a down payment on a house.
You will need to downgrade your housing expectations. And upgrade your mortgage payment expectations, a lot. Nocal is a great place to live, if you can get over the cost of housing.

I would move to Napa in a heartbeat. You don't need a huge house cause you're going to be spending most of your time enjoying the outside. I say you owe it to yourself to at least go look.

Yes indeed I will be checking it out at the very least. And since its just me the bikes and the dog, the house would be small-ish. Thanks guys.

No, didn't you read the SF secede thread. We have all these anti-military, and homosexuals doing all sorts of things everywhere. No place is safe in CA, particularily Napa, since they all like to go on the winery tours.
